In their continued effort to get closer to OLED (LG's patented) technology, Samsung researchers have found a way to make the company's QPLED (QLED) technology behave more like OLEDs.

Samsung found a way for QLED TVs not to use backlight, similar to OLED technology

So the new development would allow QLED displays that don't require a backlight, (which all current Samsungs still have) since they can't use OLED technology due to their patent. The new study shows that each pixel provides its own lighting, just like with OLED displays. So that would be the holy grail for Samsung, true 'quantum dot' LED panels that promise self-emitting diodes.

In the Samsung statement

A duo of researchers and fellows from Samsung Electronics have demonstrated, in a new study, the potential of quantum dot light emitting diodes (QLEDs) for commercial purposes. On November 27 (London), this study on the commercialization of QLEDs was published by Nature, the world's leading multidisciplinary scientific journal. The authors of this innovative project are Dr. Eunjoo Jang, a Samsung Fellow, and Dr. Yu-Ho Won, Principal Investigator of the Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology. By improving the structure of Quantum Dots, the team managed to vastly improve quantum efficiency as well as extend the life of the QLED element. The team found, upon concluding their study, that their method had improved quantum efficiency by 21.4% and increased the QLED's lifespan to one million hours.

"Thanks to Samsung's distinctive core materials technology, we were able to work to explore the potential of next-generation displays, " said Dr. Jang. "Looking ahead, we want to expand the range of green display development by adopting Quantum Dots in new structures." "This study has enabled the production of quantum dots with high efficiency regardless of layer thickness, providing a better understanding of the mechanism that produces quantum dots, " added Dr. Won.

In 2015, Samsung launched its Cadmium-free (CD-free) Quantum Dot TV and continues to lead the development of the next generation of green displays, having obtained more than 170 patents for this purpose.
