Everyone took it for granted that AMD Radeon RX 600 graphics cards would continue to be a rehash of the current RX 500, which in turn is a rehash of the RX 400. New information suggests that the situation would be very different, as the new cards would be based on the Vega architecture at 12 nm.

AMD Radeon RX 600 based on Vega architecture

A rumor has come up, which is quite reasonable after all. It is pointed out that the Radeon RX 600 will arrive in October of this year with a Vega silicon manufactured at 12 nm, which would be a major renovation, for a range that has been stagnant for more than two years in the Polaris architecture at 14 nm.

Vega is the most advanced AMD architecture and, although it is several steps from Pascal and Volta from Nvidia, it does include some interesting news regarding Polaris silicon. A mid-sized Vega-based chip could be noticeably more energy efficient than Polaris, so it could offer significantly more performance than the Radeon RX 580 without sacrificing energy efficiency.

We recommend reading our post about AMD Radeon RX Vega 64 Review in Spanish (full analysis)

Raven Ridge APUs have already shown that Vega is an architecture that works very well on small chips, with very moderate power consumption and good performance. What does not sound credible is the use of HBM2 memory in mid-range and low-end graphics cards, unless AMD also offers an improved version of the Vega 56 and Vega 64 within the Radeon RX series, which has a reputation much better than the Vega series.

The most reasonable thing is that a silicon similar to that found inside the Intel Kaby Lake-G processors is used, which has a maximum of 1, 536 shaders. The operating frequencies could be quite high, so its performance would be higher than that offered by the Polaris silicon of the Radeon RX 580.

Vega is the best that AMD has to deal with Nvidia until the arrival of Navi in 2019, let's hope that the new architecture is an important step forward for the good of all users.
