Unboxing and design

The Ramsta S800 comes in a cardboard box with the typical design of this family of SSD drives. The box is based on a black print with the company's logo (closed fist), in red. The manufacturer advises us on the box of some of its most important characteristics, such as capacity and that it is SATA III.

Once we opened the box and found the Ramsta S800 embedded in a plastic surface. Don't look, you won't find anything else.

This Ramsta S800 is built with a 2.5-inch form factor and a thickness of only 7mm, which ensures maximum compatibility with both computers and laptops. The chassis is made of aluminum to aid in cooling. Although we do not like that singing red, but it will not really be seen on our PC.

As for the connection interface with the PC, it is the typical SATA III 6 GB / s port, which is available on all motherboards and notebook computers. So compatibility is guaranteed for all systems that have one of them. Be careful, to get the most out of it, it has to be SATA 3.

This model is available in 120GB, 240GB, 480GB and 1TB storage capacities to fit all end user.

When we open the Ramsta S800 we can see that the dissipation is quite low. We miss a thermal pad for the memories and the controller.

Ramsta has decided to use 3D TLC memories, which as many of you know are not up to MLC standards, but they are more than enough for home use. We miss the manufacturer to tell us what is the durability of writing data, the only way to check it would be to leave it 24/7/365 doing the test, but it will not be possible to do it.

Along with the TLC memory chips we find the Silicon Motion SMI2258G controller that is quite a lot in these units (Kingdian, ZSPEED…). The manufacturer assures us to achieve a sequential data reading speed of 562 MB / s and 468 MB / s in sequential data writing.

These speeds put you at the limit of what can be achieved with the SATA III 6 GB / s interface. Its performance in 4K random operations is capable of reaching +50, 000 IOPS. One of the problems of these units is the lack of warranty, although in China they give us 1 year, it will really cost us more to ship than the SSD costs.

Final words and conclusion about Ramsta S800

The Ramsta S800 is a cheap Chinese SSD that offers us good performance at a very moderate price. It has a Silicon Motion controller , TLC memories and a good chassis that keeps the PCB cool. But that its cooling could be better with a thermal pad.

As we have seen in our test bench, the performance is good, but it does not live up to the specifications promised by the manufacturer. That does not mean that it is not an ideal option to give a second life to your computer and thus improve the fluidity of the system .
