Razer Seiren X Mercury is also part of the Razer family of white peripherals. A condenser microphone created for use in streaming with great portability and a very compact design, now also with this white skin that gives it a more elegant and exclusive touch. We already analyzed its older brother, the Seiren Elite, so it will be very interesting to see what that much cheaper model gives us and with USB connectivity compatible with PCs and consoles.

As always, we must thank Razer for their trust in us for sending us their product for in-depth analysis.

Razer Seiren X Mercury technical features

Unboxing

We start with the Unboxing of Razer Seiren X Mercury, a small desktop microphone that has come to us in its usual presentation, consisting of a high-quality rigid cardboard box, although in this case black and green have been replaced by white and black other than the Mercury series.

In the box we always have a photo of the assembled product and information about it on the back. The opening is done in a box format, by the widest part. Inside, the bundle is divided into two floors, both with a thick black polyurethane foam mold that allows the parts of the mic to be stored without being damaged. In this way we have the following elements:

  • Razer Seiren X Mercury Microphone Metal Base Tie Rod Micro USB to USB Cable Instruction Manual

We simply fear the strict and necessary to start using this microphone. Razer has not included a saliva filter or a foam head, which we believe would have been useful and could go into the cost of the microphone perfectly.

Microphone design

Razer Seiren X Mercury is a microphone whose base version is black, but this year Razer has launched its new range of Mercury White products where it has included its best-selling and most successful models. They include the X Series, an extremely versatile microphone with excellent features and a price quite adjusted to the needs of professional streamers. Of course, we do not like that those in Europe raise the price by 10 euros, when in America it is worth 100 dollars.

Well, we are now with the design of the main part of this microphone, that is, the encapsulation that stores the entire capture system of it. It is a cylindrical shaped element made of rigid and rough plastic, at least on the outside, and a frame presumably made of metal, judging by its notorious weight. Measurements are 128 mm high, by 50 mm in diameter, identical measurements from above and below.

This encapsulation can be divided into two parts. First, the superior one that features a semi-open design for sound capture, both front and rear. In it, a silver metallic mesh with small holes has been placed. Behind it and inside, a fairly thick block of polyurethane foam protects the condenser system and membrane from saliva, dirt and residual noise.

In the lower area there is a wheel to raise and lower the volume of the audio output, as well as a button to turn the microphone on or off. Everything very accessible and simple, as we like. The manufacturer reports that an extra support has been placed inside the package for the shock-resistant capture system and with absorption of impact noise.

We finished with the base of the Razer Seiren X Mercury, where we find the Micro USB port for connection with the equipment, and an analog 3.5 mm Jack port to connect headphones and listen to the sound without LAG while recording. In the central area we have the threaded hole to connect it to the support base. We do not know for sure, but surely this hole is compatible with professional ergonomic arms and other accessories for microphones.

Base design

The support system of Razer Seiren X Mercury in this model is extremely simple, since we only have a circular base built in metal and painted in white. Its dimensions are 90 mm in diameter by about 25 mm in height (without the rod). It has a good weight to keep the microphone fixed and it has also been fitted with a base covered in soft, sticky rubber foam to prevent movement of the equipment.

At the top is a small thread that serves to install the rod that will be attached to the microphone. It has a metal articulation that allows you to move anywhere and the microphone at an angle of about 15 °.

The rod for its part is simply a small cylinder 30 mm long with a thread on both sides. The fully assembled system will measure 185 mm high and 90 mm wide, that's what it will occupy on our desk. You will also have noticed that the USB cable has a very high quality white cloth mesh.

Audio quality and performance

Razer Seiren X Mercury features a 25mm diameter condenser capsule sound capture system. The manufacturer has used a super- cardioid pickup pattern, which is a variant of the cardioid mode, but noticeably tighter to reduce the range of noise capture. This effectively causes the front sound to be captured cleaner, although it does generate a small capture range at the back that will also capture sound.

The sampling rate of the equipment allows us to capture sound at a maximum of 48 kHz, although normally it will be 44.1 kHz, and at a depth of 16 bits. Normal figures for high performance equipment. The sensitivity is 17.8 mV / Pa measured at 1 kHz, with a sound pressure of up to 110 dB also measured at 1 kHz. The response frequency range is between 20 Hz and 20, 000 Hz, the entire range audible to humans, thus being able to record from the lowest to the highest frequencies. Information is also provided about the percentage of harmonic distortion, which is less than 1%.

But in addition to the characteristics of its microphone, it is also worth talking about the internal DAC that this Razer Seiren X Mercury has, since it will allow us to connect headphones through a 3.5 mm Jack and listen to us simultaneously while recording, and I must say that, without any LAG, as promised.

This amplifier offers us an output power of 125 mW (RMS) at 32 Ω with a distortion of less than 0.5%. Its response frequency is between 20 Hz and 20, 000 Hz with a signal / noise ratio greater than 85 dB. This means that even at very high volumes the sound will not be distorted.

This microphone is compatible with PC, MacOS 10.8 or higher and consoles like PS4. In addition, there is a specific version for PS4, in blue, although we already anticipated that this Seiren is perfectly compatible. Likewise, its compatibility with XSplit, OBS and other unspecified programs that you use is ensured.

Putting all this into practice, we have a microphone designed mainly for stereo users, although with this wide frequency capture we can almost use it for practically anything we set out to. The large opening of the condenser capsule will give us great sound quality even at very high volumes and recording very close to it, as we have been testing, without generating the typical distortion when we place ourselves on top of it. In the first sound capture, I have positioned myself about 20 cm from it.

But this also causes the sound capture range to increase enormously, something that will be good for users who want to have the equipment removed from them, but bad if we have a lot of noise near the microphone, for example, a mouse or keyboard clicking, the computer tower or ambient sound from outside. In the second sound capture, I was about 60 - 70 cm away , and as you can see, it was practically recorded at the same volume as the first capture. So the sensitivity is really high, but the audio cleanliness is spectacular. Even at a distance of more than 1 meter it captures a considerable level of sound.

Likewise, I have had to play with the overall volume of the equipment, since, if we put it to the maximum, at least in my case, it will put some external noise. It is all a matter of lowering this volume to 60% or 70% of the maximum, until we find a profile that we like. It would not have been wrong to have a wheel to modify the gain of the mic directly on it, and thus allow more leeway, but hey, that's what the top models are for.

For your information, the two sound samples have been recorded using the free Oceanaudio software at a quality of 44 kHz and 16 bit, which generates a depth of 256 kbps. We have not needed to install any additional software, although we have made use of Nahimic 3 integrated on board to modify the volume of the mic.

Final words and conclusion about Razer Seiren X Mercury

We come to the end of one more review with the protagonist Razer, one in which we have analyzed the best we can this Razer Seiren X Mercury, recording some examples for you to have as a reference. Let's not forget that this Mercury version has a white skin instead of the typical black one.

Razer knows how to do things right, especially when it comes to gaming-oriented peripherals for content creators. An example of them is this microphone, with a very compact design and quality finishes to be able to transport it wherever we want. It is Plug and Play, and we only have to worry about the recording volume.

We recommend reading the best microphones on the market

And it is that the recording quality is very good, as you have seen, no residual noise has been recorded thanks to its supercardioid pattern, and that had a fan and tower quite close to the microphone. Its 25mm condenser capsule supports the entire spectrum of audible recording at very high levels. This allows it to record at high quality whether we are very close or 60-70 cm away.

We can only miss some type of supplement in the form of an external saliva filter or an extra foam head. In any case, the package already includes its own filter and shock noise suppression system.

We finish with the price, although you already have it at the beginning, for Spain and on its official page we find it for 109.99 euros, and $ 99.99 in America. Due to the high quality in general, we recommend it for users with experience in streaming and content creation, or those who want to start with something of quality.
