Following the same line as its predecessors, the Razer Wolverine Ultimate was launched, a gaming controller designed to play on both Xbox One and Windows 10 with the best features and quality of materials to which we are accustomed. Some of the already characteristic functions that we will find are the Razer chroma ambient light, the mapping of buttons through software and the possibility of exchanging the spreaders and joysticks to choose the one that offers us the best ergonomics. It is a pity that it does not incorporate a Bluetooth connection and focuses on the use of the cable.

The packaging of this Razer Wolverine Ultimate is not far from that seen in other models. The box shows on its front a zenith plane of the remote control as opposed to the black background, the Razer logo and the model name. In the upper part, a band of the Xbox brand green color stands out, which is topped by the console logo. The back breaks down some of the features of the controller. When lifting the front cover, we find, very well padded, a rigid transport and protection cover inside which is the control, two interchangeable sticks of different shapes and an interchangeable directional crosshead. The set is completed with the USB to microUSB type B connection cable. In total we find:

  • Razer Wolverine Ultimate controller. Protective carrying case. Two interchangeable joysticks. One interchangeable crosshead. USB to microUSB type B cable. User manual. Razer logo stickers.

General layout

Unlike the Razer controls for Playstation 4, which do not bear much similarity to the originals, the design of this Razer Wolverine Ultimate bears a great resemblance to those that come standard with the Xbox One. With a medium size and thickness, the main material with which the remote is made is rigid black plastic. The only exception is the rear part of the hand grips, which has a rough design and a rubbery material for greater grip and comfort. It is a very well implemented features and is always appreciated at the company controls. The measurements of the remote are 106 x 156 x 66 mm and 272 grams of weight.

Front design

The front of the remote has a joystick on the upper left, which can be interchanged with any of the other two. The one that comes by default, has a hollow and in the center a small protuberance so that there is not much slippage. One of the other two joysticks to exchange, has the same design with the hollow but with a greater height. The second replacement joystick, on the other hand, has a completely smooth and convex shape, a matter of taste.

Below the left joystick is the steering crossbar, again we can choose between a crosshead with all the buttons linked together by the same plastic or a crosshead in which each directional button is independent of the others. To the right of this crosshead, and as is customary on the Xbox controls, is the right stick. It is worth noting the manufacture of these, the part that supports the head is made of a metal alloy while the upper part is made of rigid plastic to avoid high wear.

The action buttons located on the front right, seem similar to that of traditional controls but have the difference of having a response very similar to the mechanical keyboard, with the advantage of having a shorter stroke and being able to obtain a faster response. One aspect that you may or may not like is the characteristic sound they make when pressed, a slight click, which can annoy the most picky people with these things.

Among all these buttons, we can find in the middle of the command the View and Menu buttons, these do keep the traditional press since a quick response is not necessary in them. Between both buttons you can see the Razer logo in silk-screen printing.

At the top we find on the one hand a small led to warn us that the remote is on. Above it is the button with the Xbox logo, which will need to be pressed after connecting the controller using the cable to turn it on. Around this button is the area with the Chroma lighting effects. This lighting can be configured with the Razer Synapse app, as we will see later to change the lighting effect.

At the bottom front of the controller, razer has entered four hotkeys for different functions. From left to right they are: Reassignment button, which is used to assign front buttons to personalization buttons; Profiles change button, to alternate between two profiles (a blue or green led warns us of the chosen profile); Microphone off or on button and Audio control button. This last button has different options, if you press once the main volume increases, on the other hand if you hold down and press the directional crosshead up or down, the general volume is modified more precisely. If we press the left button on the crosshead instead, the game sound decreases and the chat sound increases. Press the right button of the crosshead, carry out the opposite action to that of the left.

Edge design

The front edge of the knob has the four triggers already typical of modern knobs and feature a slightly metallic look and smooth feel. The superior ones have a greater flat surface to place the fingers but a short stroke of pulsation. In general the feeling is good but personally I still prefer that they add a little more travel.

The lower triggers have an excellent curved shape for use and, as usual in Razer, have a switch with two positions to choose a greater or lesser travel of these triggers.

Between the four rigorous triggers, there are two other triggers called M1 and M2 to customize them as we wish. In between these is the microUSB type B port for cable connection, the only way to connect the remote.

The bottom edge of the Razer Wolverine Ultimate only features a 3.5mm audio jack port for connecting headphones or earphones.

Rear design

The rear part of the remote control stands out for having at the top the two switches to change the travel of the lower triggers, as we mentioned, and it is at the bottom where other four customizable buttons are located with a shape similar to levers but without reaching be. The upper two can be mapped while the lower two, when pressed, increase or decrease the sensitivity of the sticks.

These buttons for those less used to using levers, may seem somewhat cumbersome or difficult to press at first, but after a short adaptation period they get used to it. Although it is true that these buttons are perhaps too centered instead of being placed a little more open, which would facilitate their handling. For those looking for controls similar to those of levers, you will find in this Razer Wolverine Ultimate an interesting option to consider.

Ergonomics and use

The Razer Wolverine Ultimate despite its large size, fits very well in the hand thanks to the grips, both for its shape and for its rubbery texture that helps strengthen the control. When it comes to playing, the response time of the buttons is appreciated along with their manufacturing quality. Of all the buttons, the flat directional pad is the one that squeaks a little because of its short travel and the creaking it makes, preferring much more the pad with the separate buttons, which from my point of view works better.

The biggest advantage is the possibility of being able to select the type of spider or joystick depending on the game we are going to play or our personal tastes. This is helped by the fact that removing and inserting the buttons is really simple and easy.

Overall, the flat crosshead, rear buttons, and LB and LR triggers are the least appealing to me within a well-resolved button layout as a whole.

software

Both for the mapping of the buttons and for the configuration of the Chroma lighting, it will be necessary to download and install the application: Razer Synapse for Xbox, either from the Microsoft Store in Windows 10, or from the Xbox One Store.

Once installed, from the app we will have the possibility to create multiple custom profiles, although we can only save two of them to toggle them using the quick access button, the other profiles will be kept saved in the app.

Each profile allows us to modify various settings:

  • Assign buttons: With this we can map the special buttons on the top and rear edges.

  • Lighting: We can choose between the different types of effects for Chroma lighting: Breathing, Immersive, Reactive, Spectrum Rotation, Static, Wave or None.

  • Focus: You can adjust the level of decrease in sensitivity when the M5 button is pressed, this gives more precision in some games.

  • Agile: Similar to the previous one but in this case the sensitivity increase of the stick when the M6 button is pressed is adjusted, this gives greater agility in games.

  • Vibration: In this section it is possible to adjust the intensity of the vibration of both the upper triggers and those located in the grips.

In short, we find a very complete app, with many options and well developed to further expand that customization of each detail and to leave everything to our liking.

Connectivity

A braided cable is included to connect the controller to the PC or console. It is a long cable, which can be seen to be quality and has the security system already seen in the Microsoft controls, however, the only downside is that this cable is the only one that fits the remote control, not because it has a rare connector, it is microUSB but for the form of housing where it connects, which has a special shape. The company does it to ensure a correct connection, since any disconnection can ruin the game but in case of losing, forgetting or breaking the cable, we will not be able to connect any other. It will be necessary to buy then buy another spare part, something that is not very funny.

Conclusion and final words of the Razer Wolverine Ultimate

On this occasion we find a great command in every way. Razer continues to do a great job of choosing materials and building the controller. In that regard, nothing negative can be said. Only some buttons or their position can feel better or worse, but that feeling ends up being somewhat subjective, in my case I feel strange with the rear buttons and the two upper triggers, although in time one gets used to everything. Luckily, this controller is lighter than the two original Xbox One and that is always appreciated.

The great asset of this command beyond its quality, lies in its high customization of both buttons and configuration through software. It is something that can balance the scales for those more pro players who want to configure an experience according to each game.

The only downside is not having a wireless alternative, and likewise, not having the option of using other cables, although all of this has its reasons, a more robust experience with no possible delays.

To conclude, we find a command more expensive than the original Elite, specifically we talk about € 179.99. A quantity can throw back many, especially having as an alternative the Elite model at a lower price and with similar characteristics and more removable buttons.
