Reddit itself has reported that its site was hacked, and that an old database of all users registered until 2007 has been accessed, this means that only the most veteran accounts were exposed to unscrupulous hackers.

Reddit was hacked and important user data was accessed

Reddit was hacked and important data was accessed from users who have registered accounts for quite some time. For this reason, the Reddit team is recommending that all of its users go through Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) in case hackers try to use login credentials.

Last June 19, Reddit staff learned that a hacker compromised employee accounts between June 14 and 18 using the cloud and source code hosting providers. The main access points for the code and infrastructure are behind 2FA authentication, but SMS-based authentication was not secure enough.

From the site itself, Reddit has communicated the following.

All data from 2007 and prior years including account credentials and email addresses were compromised

What was accessed: A full copy of an old database backup containing the data of Reddit users from the site's launch in 2005 to May 2007. In the early years of Reddit it had far fewer features, so the most significant data contained in this backup is the account credentials (username + passwords), email addresses, and all content (mostly public, but also private messages).

How to know if your information was compromised: We are sending a message to affected users and resetting passwords for accounts where credentials may still be valid. Check your PMs and / or email box: we will notify you shortly if you have been affected.

If you are on Reddit and your account is relatively recent, you should not worry, but it never hurts to be prevented and change your access password for a new one to be more relaxed.
