Asus GTX980 Strix 4GB

The graphics card is presented in a black cardboard box with the owl pattern characteristic of this “ Strix ” range. On the cover we see the logos OC Edition, 4GB of memory, 0dB Fan and Digi +. At first things look good!

Note that the card is 29 cm long and its heatsinks is a real wonder, since it is the Direct CU II with 4 nickel-plated copper heatpipes, two 10 cm fans and its functionality at rest of not starting the fans until it reaches 65ºC.

The processor runs as standard at 1178 Mhz and with Boost it goes up to 1279 Mhz. But it is that I have managed to reach 1.55 Ghz to raise voltage and the memory frequency is 7000 Mhz, it has 4GB and it has a 256-bit bus. What a brown beast!

The Asus GTX 980 Strix has two 6 + 8-pin PCE power connections. More than enough to take advantage of the 165W of TDP of this series.

Once we open the card we find the Direct CU II heatsink that we have already explained a few paragraphs above.

The card has a custom PCB that features the GTX 980 graphics chip, codenamed: Maxwell GM204. The memory modules are Samsung K4G41325FC-HC28 and with an excellent design of 10 power phases (DIGI +) with the latest technology: " Super Alloy ". What advantages does it offer us? Well, it enhances the delivery of precise digital power for the efficiency, reliability and performance of our gaming card. This area is cooled by a black sink.

To evaluate the performance of the graphics card we have used the following applications:

All our tests have been carried out with a resolution of 1920px x 1080px.

What are we looking for in the tests?

First the best possible image quality. The most important value for us is the average FPS (Frames per second), the higher the number of FPS, the more fluid the game will be. To slightly differentiate the quality, we leave you a table to assess the quality in FPS:

Let's not fool ourselves; there are games that can have an average of 100 FPS. It may be because the game is quite old and does not require excessive graphic resources or that the graphics is the most powerful on the market, or we have GPU systems for thousands of euros. But the reality is different, and games like Crysis 3 and Metro 2033 are very demanding and do not usually give high scores.

The gaming world of the PC is increasing and the consoles are more on the side. Asus has launched the GTX980 Strix with incredible features and design: GM204 chip, very good serial frequencies, long-lasting components, great overclocking capacity and excellent 4GB of memory that offer more freedom in the gaming experience on 2K and 4K monitors..In our tests we have seen that the dissipation of the DirectCU is really cool keeping the core at 67ºC playing and in stress programs. I had heard rumors of a possible failure, but with these temperatures it shows me that they were only rumors. This does not mean that ASUS makes improvements to future heatsinks;). The feeling when playing is indisputable, with the 27 ″ monitor and 1920 x 1080 resolution we play everything to spare with an average of +65 FPS. In short, If you are looking for the best monoGPU of the moment with a cooling with zero noise. The ASUS GTX980 Strix is one of the best options on the market, although its price is on the average of other manufacturers: € 599.
