The guys at Digital Foundry offer us an interesting new comparison of the performance of various Intel Skylake processors. This time they intend to show us how the Core i3 6100 and Core i5 6500 can benefit from overclocking by BCLK to be very close and even above other much more expensive chips.

Specifically, they have faced the Core i3 6100 and Core i5 6500, measured at 4.4 GHz and 4.51 GHz respectively, against the much more expensive Core i7 6700K and Core i5 6600K. The Core i3 6100 has been mounted on an MSI Gaming Z170A Gaming M5 motherboard and the Core i5 6500 has been mounted on an ASRock Z170 Pro4S.

The first test was done with the CineBench R15 benchmarks and the x264 video encoding test. As you can see both processors greatly increase their performance under overclock.

In the second test we entered the gamer territory, the processors were accompanied by a GeForce GTX TITAN X to see how they work with a top-of-the-range GPU and the results are really surprising for the Core i3 6100, which shows that it does not wrinkle in great way when put next to one of the most powerful graphics cards.

conclusion

With the arrival of Sandy Bridge, the base clock (BCLK) was said goodbye to overclocking, so the only possibility to quench the processors was acquiring the most expensive K models with unlocked multiplier. With the arrival of Skylake we return to the previous situation and again we can raise the working frequency of our processors through the BCLK, something that allows us to obtain great performance with relatively inexpensive chips such as the Core i3 6100, which with only two physical cores has Proven to be able to work in a remarkable way together with a top of the range graphics card.

This opens the possibility of creating very balanced gaming equipment with a very tight price and superior performance to that of the PS4 and Xbox One game consoles.
