I had long wanted to retire my 24 ″ 1920 × 1200 monitor and try something more innovative, current and with a more modern IPS panel. I'm not going to fool you, I was thinking from FULL HD, 2K and 4K resolutions and finally opted for the Dell UltraSharp U2913WM 29 ″ ultra panoramic with 21: 9 aspect ratio and 2560 x 1080 resolution, with 8 -bit matte IPS panel and excellent immersion in games.

Many of you will wonder what resolution you have or what is the best. The standard is the 1920 × 1080 also known as FULL HD, then we move on to the 2K screens: 2560 × 1440 and the latter as the 4K 3840 × 2160.

This specific model is positioned at the intermediate point between Full HD and 2K.

Dell UltraSharp U2913WM

Dell presents its product in a large volume cardboard box with a minimalist design where corporate colors take on light: white and blue. In it we can see the main technical characteristics and the certificates acquired.

The Dell UltraSharp U2913WM is a 29-inch 73-cm ultra-wide monitor with a 21: 9 aspect ratio and 2560 x 1080 resolution. At first glance we can already see that it is very large, because it has very long dimensions of 69.98 x 19.42 x 35.87 cm and a weight of around 6Kg. Here we must be careful since the same is something big for our desktop.

The screen has a maximum brightness of 349cd / m2 with 1, 170: 1 contrast ratio. Its configuration and factory calibration is quite good, although we recommend passing a colimeter to adjust to our needs. In its OSD it allows us to choose between several tones, the one that I recommend is the sRGB option that is the one that is best seen.

Below we detail their Bundle:

  • Dell UltraSharp U2913WM monitor. Power cord. DVI cable for connection. Manual and quick guide.

It comes equipped with a state-of-the-art 8-bit LG matte IPS panel, exactly the same as its competitor LG 29EA93P at 60 Hz. These panels have very thin side bevels of just a few mm, which almost makes us believe that does not have. Where it shows a little more is at the top and bottom edges.

One of the great advantages compared to its competitor is that the base is very solid and allows us to adjust the monitor both in inclination and height (adjustment of 13 cm). The pivotable option is not possible in this model and I think it is understood, being so panoramic it could be considered quite uncomfortable. When we carefully view the back of the monitor, we see that the base has a VESA factor, this allows us to remove it and thus be able to mount it on a wall bracket.

On the connections we find a VGA (D-SUB) connection, another HDMI, two DisplayPort ports, a mini DisplayPort and a DVI, While the LG differs in fewer connections but includes two HDMI.

Another point that made me opt for this monitor was the HUB with four USB ports: two in the left frame and the other two in the rear.

Gaming experience

Final words and conclusion

We are used to using Full HD resolutions (16: 9) since it is the standard of the market, although as we have seen there are more formats and resolutions on the market. The Dell UltraSharp U2913WM is a monitor that dares with something different a 21: 9 format and a native resolution 2560 x 1080 somewhat baffling. It has a size of 29 ″ inches, but make no mistake… because it is no taller than a 23 ″ monitor, making it an ultra-wide monitor.

One of the great advantages is that it mounts the same matte IPS panel as the LG 29EA93P: 8 ms response. 8 bits and a brightness of 300 cd / m2 (typical), and a minimum of 50 cd / m2. Another of its points in favor of its rival that the base allows us an adjustment of up to 13 cm high and a perfect inclination to watch movies and play with all kinds of details.

Our gaming experience has been excellent both in games like Battlefield 4, Crsyis 3 and Grid, the immersion in the game is fantastic. Even playing Sim City-style games everything looks different. It is the closest thing to a Sorround setup (3 monitors) but without the annoying frame. When it comes to work, I have to be honest at first it was hard for me to get used to it, but after a few days I got used to it. It is very easy to adjust two windows, for example a browser and another for the photo retouch editor.

What I like the most is that with a mid-range graphics card: GTX760 or R9 270X it is more than enough to play with an average of 70 to 100 FPS per game, without having power or memory problems.

Regarding connections, it allows us a large number of possibilities: D-SUB, DVI, Displayport and HDMI connection. It also includes a HUB with 4 USB 3.0 connections, which is luxurious to connect our USB sticks.

In short, if you want to try a new resolution that does not force you to pay big on a graphics card, an 8-bit IPS panel, USB 3.0 connection, a tilting base and a 3-year warranty, the Dell UltraSharp U2913WM is the best with format 21: 9 and native 2560 × 1080 resolution. Its store price ranges from € 400.
