The previous course was a breakthrough in the market for Shuttle. Innovations in barebones and OmniNAS KD20 equipment set a new trend among users. Just over a month ago, it launched two new d1e NAS models. The first is the OmniNAS KD22 and KD21.

In this review we will see everything you should know about the OmiNas KD22 and its new technical characteristics (1.2 ghz dual core processor. 512 MB DDR3…) and its wireless technology.

Shuttle OmniNAS KD22 in detail

Shuttle gives us a classic introduction to his NAS series. White box and covered with simple drawings. The box is neither light nor very thoughtful, it is ideal for long transport. On one side we have a label with the most important specifications of the NAS.

As soon as we open the box, we see that it is perfectly packed and protected by two pieces of foam rubber and a plastic covering the NAS. This system is ideal to cushion any blow.

Next to the NAS we have a small box that includes:

  • Hardware 65W power adapter. Power and ethernet cable. 2 Installation CD: drivers and Acronis True Image HD. Manual and quick guide.

Let's dig deeper into the KD22. It is as small as its previous version and this time it is black. The finish can be classified as excellent, since it uses brushed aluminum that helps dissipate the heat of the hard drives.

On the front we have a plastic door that hides two 3.5 / 2.5 ″ hard drive enclosures. If we keep looking at the power button at the top. Two USB 3.0 connections and an SD card reader to give us an extra expansion:).

The hard drive trays have a small lock (note they are not HOTSWAP / Remove the disc when hot) to avoid movements or jerks in their transport. Its structure is completely metallic and each one is identified with the HDD1 or HDD2 label .

On the sides it has small racks to improve cooling. Those fine lines add an even more elegant touch. How nice this NAS paints!

At the back we see the fan shaft that is activated when the system begins to raise its temperature. Specifically, it uses an APISTEC of 70 mm and 0.15A. An Ethernet connection, power and a USB 2.0 connection.

In the front of the NAS we have two rubber strips that prevent vibrations and avoid possible slipping on the surface.

As a curiosity and very practical from my point of view, pressing the power button for less than a second will turn off the LED light. Just press it a second time to activate it again. Shuttle allows us to turn off the LED function to avoid “annoying light” while watching a movie (living room or bedroom).

Speaking of the technical part, it has a dual core SOC processor: Marvell 88F6707 1.2 ghz, 512 MB DDR3 Hynix H27U1G8F2BTR, EtronTech EJ168A IC USB controller, Realtek network card and a Realtek RTL8188CE wireless network card. Enough to have excellent quality, power and consumption.

Installation and Software

The installation is very simple, we must connect the NAS to the light and to our router / switch on the RJ45 plug. Since we do not know the IP assigned to it, we have to use the CD provided by Shuttle and press the Search / Search button and it will tell us what the IP is. In this case it is 192.168.1.133.

The NAS allows us to choose the configuration of the hard drives. If we connect two, we have RAID 0.1 or JBOD profiles. The NAS will reboot and we will enter the IP address in our browser. With the user admin and password blank.

Navigation is almost traced to that of the OmniNAS KD22 but much better refined.

The application allows us from configuring the NAS (IP address, name on the network) to turning it into a MEDIA Server.

WE RECOMMEND YOU Shuttle announces its new mini Shuttle DH270PC DH270

We can also create a shared resource to a USB drive, create automatic "backups" and use the download bitorrent client. It covers all the needs of a house. It only lacks that it works as HTPC and plays movies…

Final words and conclusion.

The OMNINAS KD22 Shuttle is a dual bay small business home NAS. It includes better connectivity thanks to its two front USB 3.0 ports, an irresistible consumption and a very elegant aesthetic, thanks to the black color with aluminum frame.

We have several news to highlight regarding the KD20. Improvement in hardware power, which allows to carry out several processes at the same time or in the background without saturating the equipment. We have found that increasing the speed of the processor (CPU) and RAM has helped improve the speed of data transfer. One of the most interesting points is its Wifi connection that gives us a lot of play within a home network.

Regarding the software, it includes an important update. It includes several new programs or plugins: Live Update Firmware allows us to update with a single click from our NAS.

I have made several consumption measurements with two 3TB RED Western Digital hard drives. We have had in suspension "Sleep" an average of 8.5w. At idle "15w" and at maximum power over (full) 21.2W. Which strikes me as excellent measures.

If Shuttle thinks about the option of expanding the same system but with 4 hard drives. It will be a guaranteed success in the domestic and business market. Because it has EVERYTHING.

In short, if you are looking for a NAS for your home or small business and that with two hard drive bays is enough. The OmniNAS KD22 NAS should rank as your # 1 candidate. For its great price (€ 179), hardware and software capabilities.
