We have recently experienced the release of the new Nvidia RTX SUPER graphics cards , considerable improvements over their predecessors. Therefore, it was inevitable to make comparisons between them and here we will see the confrontation of the most powerful: RTX 2080 SUPER vs RTX 2060 SUPER.
Luckily, by belonging to the same brand, the two charts share numerous features and technologies, making it easy to compare.
We will start by talking about the RTX 2080 SUPER , since it is the older sister of the line.

RTX 2080 SUPER
The Nvidia RTX 2080 SUPER is the strongest graphics in the new RTX SUPER line . It has an improvement in most of its most important sections, as it could not be otherwise.
Without being as powerful as the current RTX 2080 Ti, this graphic gives us a fairly high performance. Of course, in most video games, the SUPER is above the most powerful graphics of the previous generation (the GTX 1080 Ti).
Let's take a closer look at the characteristics of the component:
- Architecture: Turing PCB Board: TU104 CUDA Cores: 3072 RT (Ray Tracing) Cores: 48 Base Frequency: 1650 MHz Boost Frequency: 1845 MHz Transistor Count: 13.6 billion Transistor Size: 12nm Memory Speed (Effective): 15.5Gbps Memory size: 8GB GDDR6 Memory interface: 256-bit Max memory bandwidth : 448GB / s Power connectors: 1x8pin + 1x6pin TDP: 250W Release date: 7/23/2019 Approximate price: € 800
Unlike other comparatives, here we also have the CUDA and RT core counter.
We have to highlight that the improvement from its original version to SUPER is remarkable. We have more CUDA cores, more memory speed, which has risen from 14 Gbps to 15.5 Gbps. Finally, we must highlight that the clock frequencies in both boost and normal have improved.
With all this, the overall performance of the graph is much better and we noticed it in the different tests we have subjected it to. However, right now we can find it for a price around € 800 . Is it too much to consider a good offer or will it be better in quality / price than an RTX 2060 SUPER ?
RTX 2060 SUPER
The RTX 2060 SUPER contains in its name the brand of the 60s, the label that has been inherited from the best graphics in relation to quality / sound. Despite this and against all expectations, the SUPER version considerably increased the power and the price, so we do not know if they can keep that nickname.
Therefore, today we will take stock of its specifications and we will check if it really is the best of the line or if there is a more profitable one.
Next we will see its main characteristics:
- Architecture: Turing PCB Board: TU106 CUDA Cores: 2176 RT (Ray Tracing) Cores: 41 Base Frequency: 1470 MHz Boost Frequency: 1650 MHz Transistor Count: 10.8 Billion Transistor Size: 12nm Memory Speed (Effective): 14Gbps Size memory: 8 GB GDDR6 Memory interface: 256-bit Max memory bandwidth: 448 GB / s Power connectors: 1x8pin TDP: 160W Release date: 2/7/2019 Approximate price: € 420
We have already closely savored the specifications of the RTX 2060 SUPER before . As expected, it lags far behind in terms of specifications, but the price also breaks in two.
Among its specifications, both the frequencies and the cores are reduced by between 10% and 30%, approximately, if we compare it with its older sister.
On the other hand, some of its secondary characteristics remain the same. For example, the case of the memory size VRAM or the memory interface, where both graphs have the counter in the same number.
RTX 2080 SUPER vs
With a quick look at the specifications of both graphs we can know which is the most powerful in absolute numbers. Also, the RTX 2080 SUPER is considerably more expensive and being from the same brand can only mean one thing.
Therefore, this part of the comparison makes little sense, especially knowing that both graphs are so separate.
So something we have to look at is the amount of advantage it has and the value we get for its price.
In the case of nuclei, the older sister has about 50% more CUDA nuclei. In the case of RT cores we have approximately 30% extra. In addition, the frequency of these cores in both common work and boost is 10% higher on the RTX 2080 SUPER .
The memory speed is approximately 10% higher in the RTX 2080 SUPER , reaching 15.5 Gbps, although it should be noted that the estimated energy that the RTX 2060 SUPER will spend is considerably less. In addition, the two components share many other characteristics, so they are not so far in terms of numbers.
The last thing we have to talk about is the price, since the RTX 2080 SUPER is approximately 100% more expensive, that is, double. With this in mind, we receive approximately 25% - 35% better numbers for double the price.
However, don't get carried away by this. A 10% improvement in exchange for a 50% higher price might seem like a scam, but with that slight improvement, the graph may perform 60% better than its opponent.
To really know if these improvements are worthwhile, let's check the graphics performance in synthetic tests.
Synthetic Benchmark: RTX 2080 SUPER vs
For these tests we have performed a couple of extra tests, so we will have more data to see their differences. However, they are the first charts we have, so we apologize for not being able to compare them with others.
Both in Time Spy and in the two Fire Strike tests we clearly see the difference between the two graphs. Of course, we can also verify that the RTX 2080 SUPER also lags above most graphics, although always behind the 2080 Ti.
The performance improvement in these three tests is 32%, 25% and 25%, respectively, quite acceptable numbers.
In the special case of Fire Strike Ultra it happens that the RTX 2080 SUPER lags behind its original version. This can be caused by different compatibilities and ways of working of both graphs.
In VRMark we see some certainly special data. Here the RTX 2080 SUPER obtains not very low results, but definitely strange, since it is surpassed by the same RTX 2070 SUPER .
It may be due to a malfunction of the unit we have, but the other tests do not seem to show this same error, so we do not know exactly why.
In this last test we only have data from these three graphics cards and they more or less meet what we would expect from them. Here the improvement of the older sister compared to her younger sister is 36%, definitely the best result of the group.
Here we see the clear advantage of the RTX 2080 SUPER over the RTX 2060 SUPER. However, we remind you that synthetic tests give us a certain idea of their performance that can greatly influence design tasks. However, other more common tasks like playing video games may not replicate the results.
Therefore, next we will see the performance in video games.
Gaming Benchmarks (fps): RTX 2080 SUPER vs RTX 2060 SUPER
In gaming tests we have predictable results, but tighter than we could imagine. While the RTX 2080 SUPER works very well and sometimes outperforms even the RTX 2080 Ti , the RTX 2060 SUPER is not far behind.
The benchmarks have been tested on the following workbench:
1080p is the best terrain where the RTX 2060 SUPER can play. In it, both graphs show good frames in all video games, sometimes reaching 120fps.
The advantage of the RTX 2080 SUPER is between 4% and 29%, acceptable figures.
Going up to 1440p the results start to change.
As expected and as we have mentioned in other articles, the RTX 2060 SUPER supports 1440p , but not too freely. It depends on which video games is between 5 and 10 frames over 60 and in a few others or drops below 60 frames or duplicates them with ease, that is, very disparate data.
Here the advantage ranges between 10% and 28%, so we see how the RTX 2060 SUPER begins to lag a little behind.
In 4K the results are quite crude for both graphs.
Both suffer enough to reach 60 frames in most titles. However, both graphics remain firmly above the 30 that consoles used to offer a few years ago.
Here the advantage is between 31% and 40%, so we see a very noticeable difference between both components.
The power is palpable and deserved. Not for nothing one has much better specifications than the other. Now enter how much you care about high frame rates and how much money you have, since profitability changes between graphics.
While with the RTX 2080 SUPER, on average, each frame costs you around € 6-7, with the RTX 2060 SUPER each frame costs between € 2-3. In addition, the price of the first is double that of the second, something that we cannot ignore.
Consumption and Temperatures
Changing slightly of topic, we are going to investigate a little the consumptions and temperatures of both graphs.
As for consumption, it was evident that the older sister would be considerably more demanding. Not for nothing its TDP (consumption estimates) are terribly different.
However, we see that at rest both have a very similar consumption. On the other hand, when we demand power from them, the RTX 2080 SUPER raises the bar much more, spending about 65W more, on average.
Here we see that both graphs obtain quite good average temperatures.
We have to highlight that the RTX 2060 SUPER is the Founders Edition of Nvidia , so its cooling solution is not especially efficient (although it is not bad). On the other hand, the RTX 2080 SUPER is the version of GIGABYTE , which has more powerful and decisive fans.
At rest, both graphs are around 35ºC, a good figure. Also, when we demand that they work at their maximum, the RTX 2080 SUPER stabilizes at approximately 72ºC. Being more powerful and consuming more, its temperatures are quite equivalent, making it quite a triumph.
Final words on Nvidia graphics
The results we see are clear.
The RTX 2080 SUPER is considerably more expensive than its younger sister and we got much better results, accordingly. More specifically, the largest is 100% more expensive, has 30 ~% better specifications and offers 25 ~ 35% better performance in synthetic tests and video games.
The conclusion is as you may have determined at the beginning of the article. Nvidia's family of 60s is still considerably more profitable than 80s families, although not surprising. This second range was and is designed to be the most powerful of its lineage, so it is not strange that they cost their own (and more if they have no competition).
If you're looking for profitability first and foremost, the RTX 2060 SUPER is much better, but if you don't care about the value, the RTX 2080 SUPER is a good match. The RTX 2080 Ti may interest you too, but the quality / price is totally lost.
