Rtx 2080 super vs rtx 2070 super: comparison between the greats

Table of contents:

Anonim

The last pair of Nvidia RTX SUPER graphics that we had to compare are already here. We will talk about the two biggest exponents of the SUPER trio, two quite powerful graphics for certainly high prices. It is evident in the RTX 2080 SUPER vs RTX 2070 SUPER which one performs better. However, the question that comes to mind is: how much advantage does one have over the other? and is it worth it?

The review that the SUPER update has given them is quite positive and thanks to this we have more attractive data in all the new graphs. Not surprisingly, the problem is that prices have risen slightly alongside them. The most famous case is that of the RTX 2060 SUPER, which is worth around 50 ~ 75 € more than its standard version.

For this comparison we will start by talking about the RTX 2080 SUPER , since it is the older sister of the trio.

RTX 2080 SUPER

The RTX 2080 SUPER , the most powerful graphics in this updated trio, has recently been released.

It is intended to replace the RTX 2080 vanilla and for this it has received certain improvements in several important sections.

In addition, its starting price has been the same as its standard version, which is appreciated. However, the prices of other manufacturers have been slightly increased, so profitability has not increased as much.

Next we will see the main characteristics of this graph:

  • Architecture: Turing PCB board: TU104 CUDA cores: 3072 RT (Ray Tracing) cores: 65 Base frequency: 1650 MHz Boost frequency: 1845 MHz Transistor count: 13.6 billion Transistor size: 12nm Memory speed (effective): 15.5Gbps Memory size: 8GB GDDR6 Memory interface: 256-bit Max memory bandwidth : 448GB / s Power connectors: 1x8pin + 1x6pin TDP: 250W Release date: 7/23/2019 Approximate price: € 800

In this comparison we have added some extra data, since both components share technologies and others.

If you are aware of the approximate numbers of the classic graphics, in the SUPER versions we have more cores, better frequencies and unlocked PCB boards. The latter allows us to use more electricity, so the components are more predisposed to perform more.

On the other hand, we can see that the memory speed has increased a little less than 10%, standing at 15.5Gbps. In general, all values are considerably high, perfect for high-performance graphics ready to play in ultra 1440p and sometimes 4K.

Will this power be worth this price or will the RTX 2070 SUPER be more profitable?

RTX 2070 SUPER

The RTX 2070 SUPER is the graphics that fits at that point where we get enough power and a not too exorbitant price.

It is intended for good performance in approximately 1440p @ 60 resolutions, and here we have its exponent in the SUPER series .

Like the RTX 2080 SUPER, this graphic is the Founders Edition, which has an acceptable cooling system , although not the best.

Next we will see all its characteristics:

  • Architecture: Turing PCB Board: TU104 CUDA Cores: 2560 RT (Ray Tracing) Cores: 52 Base Frequency: 1605 MHz Boost Frequency: 1770 MHz Transistor Count: 13.6 billion Transistor Size: 12nm Memory Speed (Effective): 14Gbps Size Memory: 8GB GDDR6 Memory Interface: 256-bit Max Memory Bandwidth : 448GB / s Power Connectors: 1x8pin + 1x6pin TDP: 215W Release Date: 7/23/2019 Approximate Price: € 540

The numbers that the RTX 2070 SUPER presents to us are quite good for the price for which it is. The improvement compared to its standard version is not so abysmal, but we have to take into account that it now has a new PCB board.

This achieves higher voltages, allowing you to have considerably higher performance. Some features remain as they were, but also keep in mind that these are the same on the RTX 2080 SUPER, so it's not far behind.

As you would expect from a Nvidia graphics from the 70's family, it has very good numbers and a good price.

RTX 2080 SUPER vs RTX 2070 SUPER

It is evident which of the two graphs is more powerful than the other.

Both graphics share architecture, technologies and others and one of them has better numbers and more cores. However, the characteristics of the RTX 2070 SUPER are not far behind its older sister.

In most sections such as the frequency of the nuclei, the difference is minimal. In others, such as the number of CUDA cores, a more noticeable difference can be seen , but not too far away either.

To give you an idea, the RTX 2080 SUPER costs around 48% more and, in return, offers us between 2% and 25% better specifications.

Since the cooling system is the same, temperatures will not affect us just to determine if a graph offers better or worse performance. In other words, the differences we will see will be exclusively the difference in powers and specifications since the temperature is a constant.

But now let's see how both components behave in both synthetic tests and video games.

For the first, we can see an estimate of the power of the graph alone. It is partially representative and will give us an idea of how good it can be for design, modeling and similar works.

Instead, for video games we will see their performance in more common tasks where they have to work together with the other team components.

Synthetic Benchmarks: RTX 2080 SUPER vs RTX 2070 SUPER

In the synthetic tests we can see that the specifications of both graphs determine the results that they will have unlike comparisons with AMD . It depends on the tests, the advantages are more severe and in others more trivial, but it is seen how the RTX 2080 SUPER always tends to stay above.

In these first tests, the RTX 2080 SUPER is shown to be strictly superior to the RTX 2070 SUPER . The improvement of one over the other is between 11% and 16%, although little by little the gap is cutting.

Depending on the test, both cards rank higher than most other graphics. For example, in Fire Strike and Time Spy , both are at the highest levels, while in Fire Strike Ultra there are other graphics from previous generations that obtain better results.

At Port Royal we see how 2080 is strictly superior. The improvement in numbers is 16%, a not inconsiderable figure.

Finally, we have a very special case in VRMark , where the lowest priced graph is more powerful than its older sister.

Unfortunately, we do not know if it is caused by a bug in the program or a graphic malfunction. Despite repeating the test, the results were similar and since all the other tests present consistent data, we don't have many clues.

Gaming Benchmarks (fps): RTX 2080 SUPER vs RTX 2070 SUPER

When testing video games, we see that the RTX 2070 SUPER is capable of performing at the level of the best. It always lags a little behind its older sister, so you can see the difference in performance, but we also pay a lot more.

Although before making any inaccurate judgment, let's see the results in the three main resolutions where it is usually played: 1080p. 1440p and 4K.

The workbench used is as follows:

In 1080p , the two graphics are very close in power. In most games they tend to be among the top 3 or 5 in frames and we can easily reach 120 fps in most titles.

The power improvement is from a minimum of 1% to 12%. As the younger sister costs about € 300 less, if you are looking for great power in this resolution, we see that the RTX 2070 SUPER is much more profitable.

However, there is little point in having one of these graphics so powerful for such low resolution unless it is for high frame rates.

In 1440p we can find the point where the RTX 2070 SUPER finds its best profitability. In this strip, this graphic offers its greatest potential and we can easily achieve frames above 90 fps, a very respectable number.

The difference in performance here is between 1% and 22%, so we see that the RTX 2080 SUPER begins to stand out from its adversary. Since Doom (2016) is the only title with such close numbers, if we remove it from the equation the difference ranges between 10% and 22%.

Finally, in 4K resolutions we have quite worse results. The frames that we get are practically divided in half and we achieve with difficulty a stable rate of 60 fps. The frame difference between the two cards is between 11% and 14%.

These generations of graphics are not prepared for such high resolutions on their own. Possibly in the coming years we will unlock this level, but until then we will have to juggle SLI-style solutions and so on (which in some cases we cannot).

Consumption and Temperatures

Regarding energy expenditure and efficiency, the two graphs behave in a rather similar way, as we will now see.

Despite the fact that the TDP is quite similar (215W and 250W) the values consumed by both graphs are very equivalent.

In idle, the consumption is considerably low, with only 58W and 59W. Then, by demanding more power from the components, the consumptions rise severely to over 300W. There is a 30W difference, but it is not at all remarkable.

Of course, for any of these graphics we recommend that you have at least a power supply of approximately 650W or 750W .

As you will guess, having an identical cooling system and slightly different consumption, the temperatures are in line and quite good, by the way.

At rest they are around 32ºC and with load we reach 72ºC, quite acceptable temperatures for efficient use.

Final words on Nvidia

If you have an unlimited budget, the RTX 2080 SUPER is undoubtedly better, but to get the best of the best you should go more for the RTX 2080 Ti . Of course, we also have to tell you that it is a much more expensive graph .

In conclusion, in this battle we get very similar results, but the RTX 2070 SUPER is much more profitable. As you might expect from this comparison, the RTX 2080 SUPER is designed to get more fps, but in exchange for a disproportionate price. The price of the big sister is approximately 50% higher and its performance is only approximately 10% better.

We recommend using either of these two to play at 1440p @ 60 or even 1080p @ 144 , since the powers they have are sufficient.

However, if you don't play titles with Ray Tracing or don't care much about losing it, you may find more attractive offers on AMD . Our best recommendation is that you wait for a good offer so that any of these charts is even more profitable.
