Nvidia today announced the RTX Broadcast Engine, which is described as “a new set of RTX-accelerated software development kits that use the AI capabilities of RTX GPUs to transform live streams, ” ahead of TwitchCon. 2019, which brings together the main streamers in the world.

RTX Broadcast Engine uses Tensor cores

The company claims that the RTX Broadcast Engine uses the Tensor cores found in its RTX GPUs to "enable virtual green screens, style filters, and augmented reality effects" without the need for specific equipment. These features could allow upstream streamers to improve their production values without requiring a significant initial investment that could easily be lost if they do not find success in a somewhat unpredictable field.

Nvidia also partnered with Open Broadcaster Software (OBS) to make the RTX Greenscreen feature available to all users of the popular streaming app. The company plans to showcase this functionality to add green backgrounds to videos during TwitchCon 2019 and said it will debut in "the coming months." It is still unclear when the other revealed SDKs will be released to the public, such as RTX AR and RTX Style Filters.

RTX AR is a functionality to add augmented reality effects to videos and broadcasts in real time. RTX Style Filters, meanwhile, uses an AI technique that transforms the look of a broadcast based on an image.

The developers have also brought support for the Nvidia Video Codec SDK (used "for fast, high-quality streaming") to three more applications. It is now integrated into the Twitch Studio broadcast app released in August, the Go Live feature, used for live streaming via Discord, and Elgato game capture software, used to record 4K HDR content to 60 frames per second with the new 4K60 Pro MK.2 capture card.

More information on the RTX Broadcast Engine can be found on the Nvidia developer website.
