The new AMD Threadripper 2s have brought the 32-core and 64-thread to a relatively affordable range, while Intel offers 18-core and 36-thread at the same price, without support for technologies like ECC and with fewer PCIe lines. It is clear that not everything is the cores, there are many more factors to consider, but the new release of AMD makes a response from Intel almost obligatory. It could be X599.

X599: Intel's next high-performance platform leaked

In addition to the updates to the LGA1151 and LGA2066 socket processors, the German portal Hardwareluxx reveals, based on Asian sources, that Intel would also be working on X599, a platform based on socket 3647 that would support 28-core processors.

The leaks mention that socket 2066 will reach 22 cores, but to reach 28 it will be necessary to make use of this new chipset, which would basically be an adaptation of the C620 chipset (used for servers) in the consumer market. Thus, the LGA3647 socket would continue to be used as the aforementioned chipset, and would be somewhat more adapted to the domestic market.

Recall that these 28 cores are already available in C620 with the Intel Xeon Platinum 8180, which has an approximate cost of $ 10, 000 compared to 2, 000 for the Threadripper 2990WX. It also corresponds to the highly criticized Intel show at Computex in which they made use of industrial refrigeration with said 28 cores, but it is also true that they carried a strong overclock up to 5GHz. It remains to be seen whether the next 28-core consumer processor costs less than that $ 10, 000 and cools conveniently without the need for extreme solutions.

The information is completed with that the new chipset could make use of Hexa channel instead of Quad channel for RAM, since it is also used by its 'brother' C620, and there would be no major modifications with the X599 since it would not have high sales volume at peak performance, plus it would offer an advantage over AMD's X399.

The competition continues! We hope to know more detailed information about this chipset in September / October.
