RX VEGA positions itself against the Nvidia GTX 1080/1070

The launch of VEGA was highly anticipated by the community for two reasons, one to see if AMD had anything really powerful to compete against the GTX 1080/1070 and also to bring the high-end graphics card down in price. Nvidia launched its Pascal series over 1 year ago and since then it has had no competition in the high-end. AMD has only managed to renew its Polaris graphics cards with the RX 500 series to position itself in the mid-range, but for performance enthusiasts, there was only one option and those were the GTX 1070 and GTX 1080.

RX VEGA 64 and RX VEGA 54 arrive to break the hegemony, but perhaps the performance they offer is not as impressive as we expected after more than a year of advantage for Nvidia. But that is a personal opinion and each one will have their own, always based on the different analyzes that have been emerging in the last hours from the specialized magazines that have already been able to get their hands on it.

RX VEGA 64

Based on the VEGA architecture, we can currently get the VEGA 64 RX above 600 euros in Spain and the Liquid Edition version above 700 euros.

Specs:

  • 4, 096 shaders. 256 units of texturing. 64 units of rasterizing Bus 2048 bits 8 GB of memory HBM2 @ 1890 MHz. GPU @ 1, 677 MHz (dynamic frequency).

RX VEGA 56

This would be the most modest model in the series that rivals the GTX 1070. Currently we do not have its final price in euros, it officially costs $ 399, so in Spain we should expect it with a higher value.

Specs:

  • 3, 584 shaders. 224 texturing units. 64 raster units 2048 bit memory bus 8 GB of memory HBM2 @ 1, 600 MHz. GPU @ 1, 471 MHz (dynamic frequency).

It should be noted that AMD is offering an RX VEGA Radeon ™ Packs where they facilitate a 'devastating' promotion. With the purchase of one of these graphics cards, they offer a discount of $ 200 on any FreeSync monitor from certain retailers. In addition, a discount of $ 100 to do with a Ryzen 7 1800X processor and an X370 motherboard, in addition to Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus and Free Prey (they clarify that it varies by region).

At the time of writing these lines this pack is not available for the Spanish market.

RX VEGA 64 vs GTX 1080 & RX VEGA 56 vs GTX 1070

For the comparison between the RX VEGA 64/56 vs the GTX 1080/1070 we have collected the TechPowerUp analysis which is quite representative, since all the analyzes say more or less the same.

The games used for the tests are many and one of the most used today to analyze the performance of any powerful graphics card: Battlefield 1, The Witcher 3, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Ghost Recon Wildlands, Prey or Sniper Elite 4, among many others. The comparison compares all the games for a final evaluation. What, if it is very clear today, both the Nvidia and AMD offer offer graphics cards with which you can enjoy any game in its highest quality at 1080p, so the next stop will be to be able to play in 4K with decent performance.

Performance comparison

Taking the relative performance of all games as a reference, we see that the RX VEGA 56 is more powerful than the GTX 1070 by only 3% but the gap widens as we increase the resolution to 4K.

On the other hand, the GTX 1080 beats the RX VEGA 64 by 13%, a figure that remains at 4K.

It is a pity that the performance could not be seen applying overclocking, since it could not be tested with the drivers that AMD gave for this test.

4K performance

To check the performance of these cards in 4K and the influence that the new HBM2 memories could have, we took the examples of Sniper Elite 4, Ghost Recon: Wildlans and Prey .

We see that the powerful GTX 1080 Ti is the only one capable of offering or approaching 4K / 60fps. Both RX VEGA 64 and VEGA 56 achieve numbers quite similar to the GTX 1080.

Consumption

This is undoubtedly the weakest point for the AMD option. The RX VEGA 64 running in turbo mode (maximum performance) consumes about 300W, well above the GTX 1080 that consumes 231W. VEGA 56 is more of the same, with a consumption very similar to the GTX 1080 Ti, but with much lower performance.

AMD will have to improve the efficiency of the new generation VEGA, since the performance per watt is very low and would not offset the outlay for those who pay close attention to these details, not only the gaming sector, but also the mining sector.

Conclusions

Remember that our analysis in Professional Review is still missing, with the rigor and impartiality that characterizes us. Judging by the results of other Anglo-Saxon and European colleagues, AMD knew how to position itself as an intermediate option between GTX 1080 and GTX 1070, where the best option is probably the RX VEGA 56 due to its price and overclocking capacity that would surpass 1080. from Nvidia, but there is still work to be done to improve the high power consumption.
