Finding the perfect SSD is not an easy task, looking at the wide variety of products, existing connections and which ones can be compatible with your motherboard. On this occasion, we have acquired a Samsung 960 EVO to bring you its analysis and see if this new M.2 NVMe disk is really worth it. Prepared! Here we go!
Technical characteristics Samsung 960 EVO
Unboxing and design
Samsung makes a pretty pleasing presentation. On its cover we see an image of the product, the model we have acquired and that it is a m2 NVMe disk.
While in the back area they indicate some of the product specifications and that they offer us a total of 3 years of warranty.
Once we open the bundle we find that everything comes perfectly packaged and protected. The SSD is supported on a plastic tray. That is, inside we find:
- Samsung 960 EVO 500GB SSD Drive Warranty Brochure
The Samsung 960 EVO has a compact and totally standard design in this type of device. To be more exact we have an M.2 NGFF-2280 unit with dimensions: 80 x 22 x 3.5 mm. Frontally we have a sticker that indicates the exact model, its serial number, model and its capacity.
The most important of these units are the components it incorporates. Specifically, the Samsung 960 EVO has the new high-performance controller with five cores : Samsung Polaris SM961 and the 48-layer 3D-VNAND TLC Flash memory chips that make a total of 500 GB in this unit. All these ingredients together exceed the benefits offered by the top of the range "Samsung 950 PRO NVMe" that has made so many sales.
It also incorporates a DRAM cache controller 9GB that promises to keep the balance of optimal performance at all times. What is its performance that the manufacturer promises us? The Samsung 960 EVO 500 GB achieves a reading of 3200 MB / s and a writing of 1800 MB / s. On the 4KB Random reading we have 330K IOPS and one in writing of 330K IOPS that we can classify as outstanding. Its consumption ranges from 2 to 3 W.
Another of its innovations is the incorporation of Samsung Intelligent TurboWrite technology that improves and increases the performance of its writing speed. This is because thanks to the incorporation of its SLC buffer it has a fixed size and can be expanded under certain circumstances. So far and looking at all our tests we have done (you will see later) it is the best SSD we have currently tested.
We must bear in mind that it incorporates a new Dynamic Thermal Guard cooling system. Although the device at rest is quite cold, when it is used in high performance tasks (playing, performing video tasks, etc…) the temperature rises . To deal with this, Samsung has decided to incorporate a small copper foil on the sticker that drops much more degrees than we expected. In addition, they have increased the copper size of the PCB to have better dissipation power.
We bring you a table that explains the differences between the models that currently exist for the Samsung 960 EVO. We hope it works for you:

- Crystal Disk Mark. AS SSD Benchmark.
Temperatures
Regarding temperatures we have 31ºC at rest and at maximum performance it rises to 46ºC. As we see, with respect to the rest of the SSD that we have analyzed, its temperatures are totally logical and are very even.
software
We really like the application that brings management for the SSD. Samsung Magician offers us the management, monitoring and maintenance of the SSD: Possibly it is the application with the most effectiveness and quality that exists in the market. We recommend having it activated always, as it is very well optimized with Windows 10.
Final words and conclusion about Samsung 960 EVO
The Samsung 960 Evo is one of the best options but the best that the NVMe SSD market offers us. They offer models from 250 gb to 1 tb. We have chosen the most that we think is more compensated: 500 GB since it can be found for a price of 250 euros.
Among its technical characteristics offers the performance of the old Samsung 950 PRO. Its read rates are higher than 3000 MB / s and the write rate is over 1800 MB / s and it is perfectly suited to our tests.
We recommend our guide to the best SSDs of the moment.
There are not many products that shade you. Only its older brother Samsung 960 PRO and the Corsair MP500 we reviewed not long ago.
Its big drawback is that there is hardly any stock in Spain and Europe . And acquiring is a really difficult task, for the rest it is a 100% recommended purchase.
