Samsung has been leading the market for high-performance SSDs for many years. The South Korean firm has always enjoyed a privileged position due to the high quality of its NAND memory chips and its controllers. The next step has been taken with the launch of the Samsung 970 EVO, a model based on NVMe technology that seeks to offer truly impressive benefits for a fairly adjusted price.

Ready to see the performance of the TOP sales of NVME SSD in the market ? Will it be worth it regarding the Samsung 960 EVO? Don't miss our review! Let's start!

This time Samsung has not sent us the sample. We have decided to buy it to update one of the portable equipment and so we take the opportunity to carry out its analysis. Since it is a review that many of you have demanded privately.

Samsung 970 EVO technical characteristics

Unboxing and design

The South Korean firm has opted for a luxury presentation for its Samsung 970 EVO model, since the SSD comes to us in a cardboard box with a very colorful design and a print of unsurpassed quality. The box informs us of all its most important technical characteristics so that we keep them in mind when making the purchase.

We open the box and find the SSD inside a plastic blister, along with all the documentation.

Finally we see a close-up of the Samsung 970 EVO SSD, this is made with a high quality PCB and top materials, which guarantees excellent durability. Samsung has great confidence in its product, proof of this is the five years it offers a guarantee, a great advantage over its rivals, who usually settle for two or three years.

Samsung has led the NVMe SSD market since the launch of the first consumer-centric drive in 2015, since then the company has continued to work to continue to improve the features and performance of its products.

The end point of this evolution is the current Samsung 970 EVO, a model that has been designed based on the M.2 2280 standard and with the PCIe Gen 3 × 4 interface, which maximizes the bandwidth of the NVMe protocol, for deliver unprecedented performance for the most demanding usage sectors, including high-volume data processing, 3D and 4K graphics work, high-end gaming, and data analysis.

Samsung 970 EVO includes Samsung's 64-layer 3D V-NAND memory technology, which achieves extremely high storage density as well as high transfer speed. Samsung has used MLC technology, which ensures excellent durability so you can write large amounts of data without worry.

Samsung 970 EVO arrives in 250 GB, 500 GB, 1, 000 GB and 2, 000 GB versions, with a spectacular resistance level that guarantees the writing of 150 TB, 300 TB, 600 TB and 1200 TB respectively in each of them.

Along with these memories has been placed a latest generation Samsung Phoenix controller, which is compatible with TRIM technology and self-collection algorithms for garbage. This controller offers a maximum speed of 3500 Mb / s in reading and 2500 MB / s in writing of sequential data, while the performance in 4K random operations reaches 500, 000 maximum IOPS in reading and 480, 000 IOPS in writing. Samsung 970 EVO uses Intelligent TurboWrite technology, which uses a large buffer size of up to 78 GB to enable faster write speeds than ever. Of course this technology does not affect the durability of the memory chips at all, thanks to it we will have the best possible performance without sacrificing durability.

Of course, this data corresponds to the 2000 GB version, the others slightly reduce its performance.

Samsung 970 EVO

Sequential reading (MB / s) Sequential Write (MB (s) Random Read (IOPS) Random Write (IOPS)
250 GB 3400 1500 200, 000 350, 000
500 GB 3400 2300 370, 000 450, 000
1TB 3400 2500 500, 000 450, 000
2 TB 3, 500 2500 500.00 480, 000

Another noteworthy aspect of the Samsung 970 EVO is its low power consumption, at just 10W maximum in writing operations. This is especially important for use on laptops, as it will offer us a longer battery life so that we can work and play longer away from the plugs.

One of the most anticipated moments is coming! Now we will show you the results obtained from the Samsung 860 EVO, which is what interests us all the most, right? We've used a state-of-the-art test bench with an i7-8700K processor, liquid cooling for the processor, and an Asus Z370 Maximus X Hero motherboard.

We always recommend installing the Samsung Magician application to always have the firmware updated, optimize the SSD and have some manufacturer's test.

We have a tab that allows us to visualize the compatibility with the system, the performance with a home benchmark, a small optimization of the system and a safe erase of the SSD in case you need to format. This is quite useful to leave it in full condition.

Final words and conclusion about Samsung 970 EVO

The Samsung 970 EVO ranks among one of the best M.2 NVMe SSD choices on the market. It has a state-of-the-art Samsung Phoenix controller, 64-layer 3D V-NAND memories with a 3-bit MLC design and, of course, this corresponds to higher-quality TLC memories . Memories run at sequential read and write of 3, 500 Mb / s read and 2, 500 MB / s respectively.

At the performance level, it has shown us that it lives up to any much more expensive SSD. For 99% of home users it is enough, although the only improvement we see is the use of REAL MLC memories.

Regarding temperatures, it has offered us 38 ºC at rest, while at maximum performance it reaches 57 ºC without any passive heatsink installed. Surely with a good passive heatsink the temperatures will be much lower and better maintain the speeds at long workload.

Any better alternative than the Samsung 970 EVO? Yes, the Samsung 970 PRO, ADATA SX800 or Corsair MP500 are alternatives with MLC memories (yes, I am very heavy in this regard) but they are 'slightly' more expensive. Currently we can find this SSD from 96 euros (250 GB model) to 716 euros (2 TB model).
