Samsung has revealed its new GDDR6 memory modules with the publication of a new document that states that the company has managed to win 36 CES 2018 Design and Innovation Awards thanks to the new technology developed for these memories.

New GDDR6 Graphics Card Memories Announced

Samsung takes chest of its new memories, stating that the new DRAM modules are faster and more efficient in energy consumption, with speeds of 16Gbps. GDDR5 memories currently operate at 1.5V with speeds that typically peak at 8Gbps. GDDR6 can run at twice that speed consuming 1.35V, so the benefits of this new memory are going to be palpable.

Double GDDR5 speed with lower power consumption

”This is the fastest, lowest power DRAM for next-generation graphics applications. It processes images and video at 16 Gbps with a data input / output bandwidth of 64 GB / s, which is equivalent to transferring approximately 12 full HD DVDs (equivalent to 5 GB) per second. ” This is what Samsung stated in the presentation.

Samsung plans for this memory to standardize 16GB for a graphics card, which means it will offer 2GB of capacity per module. This is good news for manufacturers, who will be able to add a large amount of VRAM memory with a relatively small number of modules.

This GDDR6 memory will be seen at CES 2018, with the potential to be seen on some graphics cards later, will it be on the next generation of AMD and Nvidia cards? We can not know yet and we do not know where this places the HBM2 memories that debuted in the RX VEGA generation.
