Samsung confirmed yesterday that it will shut down the central processing unit project at the Austin Research Center. The project is responsible for the design of high-end custom cores used in Exynos processors. The current custom cores found in SoCs are called Mongoose. These cores are called M5 and are listed on the company's Exynos 990.

In this case, it seems that ARM will be in charge of said manufacturing, in one of the centers that the firm has spread around the world. The Korean firm thus transfers this production.

Outsourced production

Samsung abandons the production of custom cores, although they move to semi-custom cores. So ARM remains in this sense, which would be in charge of said production. Although for now the differences between custom and semi-custom cores, the changes that this may entail, are not entirely clear, as has already been known.

These are details that we will have to wait to know shortly. Meanwhile, the Korean firm also has its agreement with AMD up and running, which assumes that the firm will manufacture the GPUs that the firm's phones will use. It is said that its commercialization will take place soon.

We will be watching for these changes and releases on Samsung processors. Since they have important consequences for this Exynos range. Surely in the coming weeks we will learn more about their agreements with ARM and AMD. What do you think about this decision of the Korean brand to stop producing custom cores?
