Samsung starts production of gddr6 memory at 18 gbps
Table of contents:
Samsung has announced that it has already started mass production of the first GDDR6 memory chips with a speed of 18 Gbps, the fastest to date and that will make possible new graphics cards much more powerful than current ones.
Samsung's 18 Gbps GDDR6 will lead the industry
The GDDR5 / X memory is already very close to what it is capable of offering, so the industry needs a replacement, HBM2 memory has proven to be too expensive to use in general, so you have to look for other options, there This is where the new GDDR6 comes in, which promises to be much cheaper to produce.
Samsung already makes HBM2 memories of 8 GB at 2.4 Gbps
Samsung's new 18 Gbps GDDR6 chips will be the leaders in the sector, thanks to them we will have a new generation of graphics processors more powerful than the current ones, something especially important in the field of video games, artificial intelligence and data centers.
These new Samsung memories are manufactured using its process at 10 nm, this allows you to create chips with a storage density of 2 GB, which is double that of the GDDR5X chips created with the process at 20 nm. Its high speed of 18 Gbps allows it to offer more than twice the speed per pin compared to 8 Gbps of GDDR5 memory.
To make this possible, a new low energy circuit design has been used, these GDDR6 memories operate at a voltage of 1.35V to reduce power consumption by approximately 35% compared to GDDR5 memory operating at a voltage of 1, 5V. This is combined with 30% higher productivity thanks to the miniaturization of the process at 10 nm compared to 20 nm.
