Many of the Samsung 4K QLED 2018 TVs are compatible with AMD FreeSync technology to enhance the gaming experience with compatible PCs and consoles. The South Korean firm plans to go further with support for a second HDMI 2.1 VRR standard.

HDMI 2.1 VRR is seen on Samsung televisions at Computex 2018

The arrival of HDMI 2.1 VRR will not take place until the end of 2019 or even 2020, although Samsung is working to add a part of the new features of this standard to its current televisions, something that will be possible through a firmware update. HDMI 2.1 VRR and FreeSync are two very similar technologies, since both work by adjusting the refresh rate of the monitor to match the number of frames per second that the graphics card sends, thus avoiding cuts in the image and the stutter.

Video games are the big beneficiaries of these technologies, although they can also be used for multimedia playback, eliminating the need for interpolation or other video playback techniques when playing content outside its native frame rate. The HDMI consortium presented at Computex 2018 a Samsung TV and an Xbox One X console using VRR, confirming that both Samsung and Microsoft will support this technology.

AMD confirmed earlier this year that the company plans to add support for HDMI 2.1 VRR with a future update to the Radeon graphics controller, which will support the new standard alongside FreeSync. For now, Nvidia has not commented on this, the company already offers its own proprietary G-Sync technology, so supporting a closed standard could make you lose sales and money related to this G-Sync technology.

Do you think Nvidia should support HDMI 2.1 VRR?
