More than 70% of current smartphones have a fingerprint reader, however, in the future they will not be visible, but will be integrated under the screen. This seems to be the current race in which the main players in the industry, Samsung and Apple compete. The second has not been able to achieve it, so it included Face ID on the iPhone X and thus, Samsung could be the first firm to integrate the fingerprint sensor under the screen of the upcoming Galaxy Note 9 in 2018.

Fingerprint reader will hide under the screen

A real race is currently underway to see which will be the first company to launch a smartphone with the integrated fingerprint sensor under the screen. However, popular analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities seems to have it much clearer: Samsung will take the lead.

According to a note sent to investors, Kuo points out that Samsung could include a fingerprint reader under the screen of the next Galaxy Note 9, scheduled for autumn 2018.

According to Kif Leswing of Business Insider, Samsung has already received samples of this novel technology. There are four candidates: Synaptics (which also supplies Apple), BeyondEyes (a Korean biometrics company), Samsung, a member of the Samsung LSI group, and Egis (a Taiwan-based company that currently supplies conventional sensors to Samsung). Of these, BeyondEyes and Samsung LSI are in a better position to get the Samsung contract, according to Kuo. The fundamental reason for this is that their technology would allow the OLED screen to act as a light source for the sensor, which would be a significant saving in battery life.

Just as it would have happened to Apple, Samsung would have already tried, without success, to integrate the fingerprint sensor under the screen of the Galaxy S8 first, and of Galaxy Note 8 later. And it seems that the Galaxy S9 is not destined to release this new technology either, so it will be necessary to wait even about a year to see it debut on the Samsung Galaxy Note 9.
