On this occasion, we bring you the review of the Samsung Portable SSD T5: a quality external SSD, with a tiny size, great finishes and exceptional performance. Do you want to know more about him? Do not miss our analysis and you will find out if it is a good option!
Before proceeding, we thank Samsung for trusting us in giving us this portable SSD for review.
Samsung Portable SSD T5 technical characteristics
Unboxing
We begin this review of the Samsung Portable SSD T5 with its corresponding unpacking. This time the portable SSD has arrived in a flexible and very compatible cardboard box. On its cover we can see an image of the SSD, the model with a large font, the size of the drive (specifically the 1TB model) and that it is compatible with Windows, MAC and Android operating systems.
While on the back we have the main technical characteristics of this SSD and its 3-year warranty certificate. It paints everything very well!
- Samsung Portable SSD T5 User Manual USB Type A to Type C Cable USB Type C to Type C Cable
That it incorporates this pair of cable sets seems to us a great success. By allowing us to quickly connect to our mobile terminal without having to purchase another cable or any PC that has one of the two available connections.
External design
This Samsung Portable SSD T5 is far from the first portable SSD released to the market by Samsung, it has a good repertoire in its catalog, some of the most interesting is the Samsung SSD T7 Touch with fingerprint reader or the high-end X5 SSD. But we will talk about these on another occasion.
This unit is the most famous for being the quality / price model for a few years. Currently we can find it available in capacities of 250 GB, 500 GB, 1 and 2 TB with a performance that a priori should satisfy any mortal.
Although we will see the technical details a little later, we want to talk about the great care that Samsung has put in design to its Samsung Portable SSD T5. The manufacturer opts for square encapsulation with rounded edges and built in metal. Being available in red, black and gold colors.
One thing to keep in mind is that we have not even been able to open it to explore the interior, although it does not have IPX water and dust certification. If someone is encouraged to open it, you just have to remove one of the stickers from its front and access the screws that allow us to disassemble it, since it is a unit on loan, we have not been encouraged.
On the metal frame we do not have any thin rubber cover that is responsible for protecting both the central area and the corners against possible falls. This gives us a bit of fear, since it can easily lead to a accidental fall and even damage the inner PCB. The Samsung Portable SSD T5 has dimensions of 57.3 x 74 mm and a weight of only 51 grams.
On both sides we have absolutely nothing, it is all metal. Simply highlight the front with a QR code, the size of the disk and the technical information (Serial number, part number and certificates of the European Union). And in its rear area we have the USB Type C connector that will serve to connect to our computer, camera or NAS.
Features and benefits
Now we move on to see in more detail the internal specifications of the Samsung Portable SSD T5, checking that ultimately we are dealing with an internal SSD tucked inside an aluminum casing. It is obvious, the technology used is the same for both, so it is an excellent decision.
And if we check for example with CristalDiskInfo this Samsung Portable SSD T5 of 1TB, we will discover that we are talking about the same configuration as an old SSD, the Samsung 850 EVO with mSATA interface. We have seen some users who have recovered their information, installing this SSD to a normal SATA controller directly to their PC.
It was an SSD with 64-layer TAND NAND 3D memories, which the manufacturer launched on the market in late 2015, so we are facing mid / low range memories in 2020. Specifically, we are talking about 150 TBW as a limited warranty on its three years for this 1TB drive and the 500GB drive. The 250GB drive is 75TBW and the 2TB drive is up to 300TBW.
The controller we have inside is an MGX manufactured by Samsung and how good the company has been in recent years. Logically, the number of operations is reduced, since the interface is slightly slower than SATA, translating into 540 MB / s for reading and 540 MB / s for writing, using a USB 3.1 Gen1 interface. The mSATA to USB 3.1 converter is the ASMedia ASM235CM and the memories are the Samsung K9DUGB8H1A. In short, a very good set and that will last us many years
Software to encrypt and keep our external SSD updated
Once we connect the SSD to our computer, we find a program for its installation inside. This application has two functions: to insert a password so that only you can see the data and to have the firmware of our external SSD always updated. We would have liked to see some extra features more, like being able to clone data from disk to disk or have more options to optimize the SSD.
Test equipment and benchmarks
We now turn to the battery of tests corresponding to this Samsung Portable SSD T5. To do this, we have used the following test bench:

The tests to which we have submitted this SSD are as follows:
- Windows Explorer Crystal Disk MarkAS SSD BenchmarkATTO Disk BenchmarkAnvil´s Storage
All these programs are in current versions, and although it is true that in this case it is a USB-connected drive, it is worth seeing what its performance is as a normal SSD with its external condition. Remember not to abuse these tests in your units, since the life time is reduced.
The most important for us is the performance in file transfer. Which we have tested both on USB 3.2 (even if USB 3.1 is compatible) the performance is very good. We've also tried it multiple times to verify, and we've always gotten better results on its native interface. We are reaching 3 20 MB / s constant and without drops, which overall is a very good result.
The performance in the benchmark programs is closer to its specifications, around 439 MB / s in reading and slightly less, 410 MB / s in writing, especially in CristalDiskMark, in the other tests it stays very close..
Final words and conclusion about the Samsung Portable SSD T5
It is time to evaluate the Samsung Portable SSD T5! We believe that it is one of the great options that we can currently acquire in the market. It is an ideal external SSD to save your most precious data, store videos for editing and has a format that fits anywhere.
Remember that it only weighs 51 grams, it is available in black, red and gold and offers a total of 3 years warranty. In our performance tests we have seen that it offers excellent productivity in both reading and writing. Good work Samsung!
It seems to us a success that includes software that allows us to encrypt the data inside. This is great for us to keep our privacy to the fullest. We can also control your updates through the Android APP.
We recommend our guide to the best external hard drives of the moment.
There is no perfect product, so we think that it has some points to improve, for example, that externally it could incorporate some rubber structure to avoid knocks on the corners and perhaps more modern hardware would seem more successful .
It is not the cheapest external SSD, but we have it available in the main online stores. The 250 GB model ranges from 75 euros, the 500GB model for 110 euros, the 1 TB model for 197.79 euros and the 2 TB model for 349 euros. What do you think of this SSD? Do you think it is worth it?
