For the next few years, solid-state batteries are expected to replace the lithium-ion batteries found in today's smartphones and many other products, mainly due to their greater durability and safety. And perhaps due to the recent experience suffered with the Note 7, the South Korean company Samsung could be one of the first to launch smartphones with these batteries.

In two years we could have safer batteries

According to information published by The Korea Herald , Samsung could launch smartphones with solid-state batteries in the next two years. At least this is what an executive of Samsung SDI (the Samsung subsidiary dedicated to the manufacture of batteries) would have declared under anonymity; According to this executive, the company will begin manufacturing solid state batteries in one to two years.

“Our technological level to produce a solid state battery for smartphones will be mature enough in one to two years. However, it is up to Samsung Electronics whether it will be used for phones. ”

The first apparent destination for these solid-state batteries would be the smartphone industry, as they offer longer life and increased security. As for its application to other sectors such as the automobile, it could be delayed until at least 2025 due to much stricter safety regulations.

Samsung SDI is not the only company working on the new solid-state battery technology, but there are quite a few actors on the scene who could also start manufacturing them in the same time frame, as is the case with LG Chem.

As we have already noted, the biggest advantage of these next generation batteries is that they are made of solid electrolytes rather than liquids, which greatly reduces the risk of fire and explosion. Do we not now understand Samsung's interest better?
