Samsung sm961, price and availability

Table of contents:

The Samsung SM961 is the latest PCI-Express format SSD for OEMs, however there will be some distributors who sell them directly to consumers. As it is an OEM product, there is no official release date, although it can be estimated.

Samsung SM961 will hit the OEM market for slightly lower prices than its predecessors

The Samsung SM961 in its 1TB variant has already been listed in stores like RamCity for AUD $ 703.99 and Overclockers UK for £ 429.95. The 512GB and 256GB variants have also been listed in Overclockers UK while nothing is known about the 120GB version. The prices of the Samsung SM961 are slightly lower than those of the Samsung 950 Pro and Toshiba OCZ RD400 due to the price differences in the OEM and Retail products and not due to the new technologies used. Samsung's new high-performance Polaris controller is cheaper than the UBX used in the 960 Pro while still using the same 32-layer V-NAND memory technology as the 850 Pro and 950 Pro.

We recommend reading the review of the Samsung 950 PRO in Spanish.

Remember that the 950 Pro comes with a 5-year warranty and is supported by NVMe drivers and Magician software, meanwhile, OEM models are not supported by the software and only offer the warranty that the seller wants to offer, in this case RamCity offers 3 years for the Samsung SM961 and Overclockers UK only offers 2 years. With all this it is difficult to pay more money for a slower product like the 950 Pro versus the SM961 just for the warranty.

The new Polaris controller of the Samsung SM961 could be launched in a new model that would come to succeed the Samsung 950 Pro, Samsung would be waiting to have its new 48-layer V-NAND memory technology ready. This would mean to avoid putting a new SSD on the market with the new Polaris controller but with obsolete NAND technology.
