Scythe Ninja 5 is the latest addition to the Japanese firm to its catalog of air cooling solutions for processors. It is a large heatsink that will keep the temperature at bay even under demanding overclocking conditions. Next to it are attached two fans with a design focused on offering the maximum possible silence as well as great performance.
Will the Scythe Ninja 5 live up to expectations? Will it compete with the famous compact liquid coolers that we find on the market? All this and much more, in our analysis.
We are grateful to Scythe for the confidence he placed in giving us his Ninja 5 for this review.
Scythe Ninja 5 technical characteristics
Unboxing and design
Scythe has opted for its usual design for the box of the Ninja 5, as we can see it gives it a very colorful and very Japanese look.
The print is of high quality and points out the most important characteristics of the product, of course we will review all of them throughout this complete analysis.
We open the box and we find the Scythe Ninja 5 heatsink perfectly accommodated by a piece of foam, in this way the manufacturer ensures that it does not move during transport, something essential for it to reach the hands of the end user in perfect condition. Next to the heatsink we find all the necessary elements for mounting on the Intel and AMD platforms.
This is the third-precision HPMS mounting system that is based on a metal backplate that is placed behind the socket on the motherboard. This system is compatible with all Intel and AMD platforms, including Ryzen Threadripper processors and its TR4 socket.
We now turn to see the two Kaze Flex 120 fans that the manufacturer has attached. Thanks to the inclusion of two fans, lower speed operation can be obtained without the performance of the heatsink being compromised, this will offer us a quieter team when working or playing. These fans include PWM operation thanks to a 4-pin connector for the silver base, this will make its spin speed automatically regulated depending on the processor temperature.
The Kaze Flex 120s are 120mm x 120mm x 27mm in size with a rotational speed between 300 and 800 RPM, generating a maximum noise of 14 dBA with a maximum air flow of 43 CFM each. The highest quality bearings have been used to manufacture them to reduce friction, which makes them produce less noise, and offer a useful life of at least 120, 000 hours.
Now we are going to focus on the design of the Scythe Ninja 5, this heatsink features a highly polished nickel-plated copper base that makes perfect contact with the IHS of the processor, the use of copper allows maximum heat transfer and nickel plating prevents corrosion. From this base six copper heatpipes with a thickness of 6 mm depart, these conduct heat from the base of the heatsink to its radiator to transmit it to the air generated by the fans.
We now turn to look at the radiator, this is huge and makes the Scythe Ninja 5 reach measurements of 155 mm x 138 mm x 180 mm along with a weight of 1190 grams once the two fans are on.
As we see is a very large and heavy heatsink, we will have to double check the compatibility with our chassis before buying it if we do not want to take an unpleasant surprise.
The radiator is made up of a multitude of aluminum fins, this is the design that all the heatsinks on the market bet on and the reason is that the fins have the function of maximizing the surface of heat exchange with air to achieve maximum capacity cooling possible.
The larger the surface, the greater the cooling capacity, this is a rule that is met by all heatsinks.
Intel socket installation
Installation is very simple, as is usually the case with X299 chipset processors. First we install the four adapters to the motherboard, as we can see in the image.
We will place both adapters for Intel socket in the position that you can see. We will tighten the four threads and fix with the screwdriver that incorporates the mounting system.
We will apply the thermal paste on the processor. In our case we have used a spice of X to try to cover almost the entire IHS. Although to have the best temperatures you can expand it with a card and leave a thin layer. We will fix the heatsink and we will have a result similar to this:
As you can see we have horizontally installed the heatsink for the LGA 2066 socket. But if we had low profile memory we could do it vertically. What a heatsink monster! Truth?
One of the last steps we have left is to connect the thief of the fans to the motherboard. In this way will both go at the same speed?
Scythe Ninja 5 is compatible with RAM memory with a height of up to 55 mm, a real achievement for the company given its large size. This demonstrates the excellent engineering work behind this product.

To test the actual performance of the heatsink we are going to stress with the powerful Intel Core i9-7900X at stock speed. As usual, our tests consist of 72 uninterrupted hours of work in stock values, since being a ten-core processor and with high frequencies, temperatures can be high.
In this way, we can observe the highest temperature peaks and the average that the heatsink reaches. We must bear in mind that when playing or using other types of software, the temperature will drop dramatically between 7 to 12ºC.
How are we going to measure the processor temperature? For this test we will use the internal sensors of the processor under the supervision of the HWiNFO64 application in its latest version. We believe it is one of the best monitoring software that exists today. Without further delay, we leave you the results obtained:
Final words and conclusion about Scythe Ninja 5
The Scythe Ninja 5 is a heatsink with great technical characteristics and cooling capacity. Its monstrous size and volume are two of its most remarkable characteristics.
We really liked that it is compatible with any Intel and AMD platform in its input sockets as in the high-end. This means that we will be able to use the Ninja 5 in future PC updates that we make.
We recommend reading the best air coolers on the market
In our performance tests we have used an i9-7900X of 10 cores and 20 threads of execution together with memories at 3200 MHz. The results are very good with 21 ºC at rest, 54 ºC at maximum temperature but it has had some other peak at more than 73 ºC. That is to say, the performance in general is of sobre saliente.
Regarding loudness? Its two 120mm Scythe Kaze flex fans have helped a lot to have a low noise, even in push & pull. I was really surprised by how quiet it is both at rest and at full power.
Currently we can find it in online stores for a price of 52 euros. We know that it is a high price, but we do not see a similar option that of such good performance by air for a lower cost?
