An increase in the production of dram memory is expected in 2018
Table of contents:
With Samsung looking to expand production capacity, global DRAM growth in 2018 is projected to reach 22.5% compared to 19.5% in 2017, according to DRAMeXchange.
Samsung, SK Nynix and Micron Technology will increase the production of DRAM memories
In these times, the production of DRAM memories is having problems to satisfy all the existing demand, this causes the price to hear memory units to increase progressively. This increase in the price of DRAM memories has been occurring since mid-2016. According to DRAMeXchange, the average contract price of the main DRAM modules for 4GB DDR4 PCs, has shot up from $ 13 at the end of the second quarter of 2016 to the $ 30.5 in the fourth quarter of 2017, this is a 130% price increase in just over a year.
Samsung allegedly plans to allocate more manufacturing capacity at the Pyeongtae and Hwaseong plants for the production of DRAM memories. Samsung will be able to expand its monthly production for 2018 by 80, 000-100, 000 wafers, and increase its total DRAM production capacity from 390, 000 wafers per month in late 2017 to almost 500, 000 units by the end of 2018, DRAMeXchange said.
SK Hynix and Micron Technology would also expand their production capacities to maintain their market share, according to DRAMeXchange.
This is good news, the bad news is that the plans to produce more memories will take at least a year, Samsung will do it at the end of 2018 and the rest are without estimated dates. This means that, for the moment, the price of RAM modules will continue to rise in price for much of 2018.
