Seagate unveils world's fastest hard drive with hamr

Seagate today showed the fastest hard drive in the world at the Open Compute summit, it is a unit with HAMR and Mach.2 technologies. The announcement of this new drive was complemented by another announcement, where the company claims to have exceeded industry reliability standards with its new HAMR hard drives.

Seagate's new hard drives have twice the performance of a standard 7200 RPM drive

The new drives use Seagate's Multi-Actuator technology, which doubles the performance of a standard hard drive. Seagate has rated the new actuator technology "Mach.2" and set a new record for a single hard drive, achieving a transfer rate of 480MB / s sequential throughput, which is more than double the 235MB / s Standard for enterprise hard drives with 7, 200 rpm. It is also 60% faster than the main 15, 000 RPM hard drives. The new drives are currently adapting to the data center, but we expect Seagate's HAMR technology to hit commercial hard drives at any time.

The new drives have two sets of actuator arms, each containing its own set of heads. Each host set can be accessed independently by the host system, providing double the performance.

The key to achieving this performance enhancement is that the hard drive has two arms with separate heads, rather than a single arm with heads, as we currently see on traditional hard drives. By acting two arms independently to read and write data to the hard drives, the performance gain is significant.

With twice the performance in hand, Seagate also announced that its new Exos drives will also soon feature HAMR (Heat Assisted Magnetic Recording) technology that can allow up to 20TB of capacity in a single drive.
