Today we are going to analyze the Sharkoon ELBRUS 1 gaming chair, one that belongs to the new series released by Sharkoon consisting of three models. In principle, they are cheaper and more basic chairs than the SKILLER with updated aesthetics and very good features.
Specifically, this model is the entry model, a fairly wide chair both in its back and seat and also finished in breathable fabric, so they come great for warm environments such as southern Spain. It is available in several colors and they have reclining armrests and a conventional tilting mechanism, being suitable for users up to 120 Kg and 190 cm in height.
Sharkoon ELBRUS 1 technical characteristics
Unboxing
This Sharkoon ELBRUS 1 is presented to us in a large box made of neutral cardboard. In it, we see a sketch printed with the shape of the chair, as well as the model we have acquired. On the outside we do not have any list of specifications, so for this we will have to go inside.
We open the box, which this time curiously is on one of the sides, with the edge box we go. We think that it is not the most comfortable way to extract the different elements, since from the widest side we have better access and stability. In any case, each of the elements comes inside a plastic bag and separated by polyethylene plates.
Within the bundle we must find the following elements:
- Backrest Seat base 2x armrest 5-arm steel legs Chair movement mechanism 5 wheels Class 4 gas piston Various trims Instruction manual Mounting screws with Allen key included
Design and construction
With this Sharkoon ELBRUS 1, the manufacturer launches a new series of gaming chairs with a total of three models. This is the most discreet of all in both performance and aesthetic design, while the ELBRUS 2 and 3 do resemble the SKILLER more. Consequently, it is a chair with a somewhat smaller backrest, although very wide and well padded as we will see throughout the analysis.
The chair is built on a chassis made up of some metal tubes and mainly wood. Specifically, the base of the handle and the base of the backrest are supported by a molded wooden panel judging by its touch, feel and weight. It is an economical chair, and the quality is logically not the same as in the higher models, although it is also a material that ensures durability and weight capacity.
Covering this chassis, we have the corresponding high-density foam molds built in molded polyurethane. Specifically, we have two different densities, one of 28 Kg / m 3 for the foam of the lumbar area of the backrest, and another of 50 Kg / m 3 for the base of the seat and lateral ears. Something that I personally liked a lot is having used fabric upholstery for the final covering of the chair, a very breathable and cool material for hot environments. The Sharkoon ELBRUS 1 is available in black for all its base and details in edges and stitched in blue, as is our model, green, gray, pink and red.
The finishes are very good in general, although it is true that the fabric is more complicated to clean than polyurethane. In any case, we will have other models to choose from, each one will have their personal tastes. Finally we leave you the captures with the sketch and measurements of the whole of the chair that is included in the assembly instructions.
Components and performance
Let us now look at each and every one of the elements that make up this Sharkoon ELBRUS 1 chair, to know first hand what we are going to find in our purchase.
Legs and wheels
Something quite positive for this price range, is to find some legs entirely made of steel. This consists of 5 arms in the shape of a star as usual and of a significant thickness to support our weight with good guarantees. Both the central area and the ends have steel reinforcements to prevent deformation over time.
The wheels we have for this Sharkoon ELBRUS 1 are a total of 5, and have a somewhat more conventional design and diameter than those that come in the SKILLER series. They are entirely made of plastic, although they have a nylon-like coating on the running surface to offer greater durability and quiet movements. The diameter of each wheel is 50 mm, and in each unit we will of course have two of them for better handling. In them, we do not have any type of brake system, this is only available from the SKILLER SGS4.
The installation on the chair legs is as simple as tightening the wheel in each of the available holes at the ends. A system of pressure washers will keep them fixed to prevent them from falling off, although it is still possible to remove them without too many complications if we pry them off with a screwdriver.
In general, the displacement is very good on completely smooth surfaces, although somewhat louder than for example silicone wheels or those with a larger diameter. Let's understand that the bigger, the turning and displacement maneuvers can be done more easily.
Piston and movement mechanism
The next most important mechanical element in a chair like the Sharkoon ELBRUS 1 is the piston and its mechanism for raising and lowering the chair. In this case we are dealing with a class 4 gas piston with DIN 4550 safety certification and capable of supporting in this case a weight of up to 120 Kg. It will be for example the same as the SKILLER SGS3 recently analyzed by us and 10 Kg more than for example the SKILLER SGS2 that I use daily.
The maximum travel of this piston will be 10 cm, which is very good compared to other models. In this way it is possible to raise the seat to 57 cm starting from a base height of 47 cm. It is a fairly wide range, something that seems to have worked well for all ELBRUS models, thus giving them greater versatility. This chair ensures comfort for maximum heights of 190 cm. The piston has the corresponding three-element telescopic trim that we will have to place before assembling the chair.
The next element is the one in charge of attaching the seat to the piston, and it provides us with the necessary mechanism to raise and lower the chair. For the Sharkoon ELBRUS 1 we only have a lever to raise and lower the chair, which also offers a locking system to prevent the chair from tilting.
In this model we only have the conventional rocker or tilt function that we can modify in terms of hardness with the manual adjustable spring located in the mechanism. This function offers us a range of inclination from 3 o to 18 o, being lockable only in one position.
Finally, we observe how the mechanism is already greased at the factory, as well as the hole to insert the piston. In case it does not come, we recommend lubricating it to avoid squeaks in the movement.
Many people associate the squeaks with the poor quality of the chair, but it is simply for lack of lubrication in the elements that move, lever, backrest, piston and seat. It happens to almost all chairs and you just have to locate the noise zone and re-grease it.
Backrest without cushions included
This time the Sharkoon ELBRUS 1 does not include ergonomic neck or lumbar cushions, in its case, we have a slightly more curved backrest than other models to supply this absence and provide better comfort.
The backrest has a design similar to the bucket type, although it is wider and its headboard is not as high as these. In addition, the lateral ears are less pronounced and deep, without the typical openings in the part of the neck. All this means that its design is more restrained and elegant for example to use it as an office chair and for especially wide people who are bothered by those typical very pronounced ears of other models. It is completely lined with breathable fabric with sewn-in thread ends of very good quality secondary color.
The backrest can be divided into two zones, each with a foam of a different density. The central area is the thickest and softest, since the foam used is 28 Kg / m 3, while the entire side and headboard is made of harder foam, with 50 Kg / m 3. The measurements of this backrest are those that appear in the captures placed at the beginning of the review, with a wingspan of 76 cm, interior width of 41 cm and shoulder to shoulder exterior of no less than 55 cm.
Regarding versatility, we can draw two conclusions. On the one hand, it is not too high, and for large lengths our heads will be left out of the backrest, but on the other, it offers a sensational width, being very comfortable and padded. Sharkoon wanted to find the best size ratio to offer good comfort to a wide range of users, and in this sense we believe that it has succeeded.
This backrest is not folding or adjustable, so we will have to use the rocker mechanism to achieve our ideal posture. As there are no holes in the headboard, cushions are not included, but it would have been a nice detail to include a Newskill Kitsune head to improve versatility and superior reach.
Finally, mention that the back or chassis of the backrest is made of a molded wooden plate and covered by the same fabric used throughout the chair. If we look at the edge, we will see that it has a double zipper to be able to disassemble and wash it, something that is rarely seen and is very comfortable for maintenance.
Seat and armrests
Molded foam of 50 Kg / m 3 density has also been used for the seat, which will offer us a sufficient hardness for heavier users. In addition, this allows less wear and deformation of the mold so that we never touch the table that makes the chassis. The finishes are also in breathable fabric made up of two molds, one for the central part or one for the edges.
Its design also resembles the bucket type, but with much smaller ears except the front area and a very wide surface, with 41 cm in the central area and a total of 56 cm including the ears. The thickness of the foam of the base is about 10-12 cm, with a depth of about 50 cm. So again we have plenty of width for large users.
While it is true that we would have preferred to have an integral metal chassis instead of having a wooden base, since if we get used to sitting badly (bent), it is possible that the table will deform a little over time. Furthermore, experience tells us that the bottom seat covering, which is a fine paper-like fabric, wears away and eventually falls off. We do not know if the same will happen in this case, but it is very common in many chairs (we talk about 5 to 7 years for this to happen).
Now we turn to see in more detail the armrests of the Sharkoon ELBRUS 1, which in this case do not come pre-installed on the seat because they are of a traditional folding type design.
In this case they are aluminum armrests made up of two pieces. The first one is in charge of joining the seat and backrest by means of 4 screws, while the second is the armrest that can be folded up. In fact, the system does not have any type of lock to put the armrest in different positions, we just pull up and it lifts up, and we push down to put it in its usual position. It cannot be folded down.
At least we do have an interesting aesthetic detail and very good comfort in them, which is a pad 26.5 cm long and 7 cm wide by about 4 cm thick. All of it is lined with polyurethane or synthetic leather fabric and with details of the secondary color on the edges.
The disadvantage of such a system is that we have no movement in 4D, but consequently we have much more stable arms and without the slack typical of systems with so much movement. In addition to the detail of the padding that we do not see in the other armrests either, because they are simply quite hard rubber.
Final appearance and assembly of the Sharkoon ELBRUS 1
In this model, the assembly lengthens a little more due to not having the armrests pre-installed. Although it does not have major problems if we make sure to place the chair mechanism and its lever correctly. As always, keep in mind that once assembled base - piston - seat, it will be very difficult to disassemble them again, since they enter under pressure.
We leave you now with a few images of the mounted chair. The total wingspan of it is 117 to 126.5 cm high, 62 cm deep and 70 cm wide.
Final words and conclusion about Sharkoon ELBRUS 1
The Sharkoon ELBRUS 1 is what Sharkoon offers us for the new entry range. A relatively inexpensive gaming chair with a fairly good construction in terms of finishes, with breathable fabric ideal for hot environments, and available in 5 different colors, always with a black background.
The design is not as radical as the rest of the models released, which is very useful for use both in offices and gaming, where we spend many hours in front of the computer. Both backrest and base are very wide, with foam of 50 Kg / m 3 at the base and softer in the backrest, it is ideal to give us great comfort as well as durability. The manufacturer's goal is to make a comfortable chair without using cushions, and we think it has.
We recommend reading the best PC chairs on the market
Regarding ergonomics, it is not too extensive, but its class 4 piston allows us a height range of 10 cm, quite wide for large or short people. For its part, the backrest is not reclining, we only have a rocker function and the armrests only fold up. Of course, a very good foam and synthetic leather padding has been installed in them.
We would have liked the seat base to be entirely of steel instead of a wooden board, but it is quite acceptable for a range of entry. However, the legs are made of very good quality steel, the chassis of the aluminum armrests and wheels have worked very well.
We finish this analysis with availability and price, and this Sharkoon ELBRUS 1 is already on the market for a price that starts at 126 euros or goes up to 170, depending on which sites. It is a great buying opportunity for those who want something versatile at an affordable cost, as both aesthetics and functionality is much better than the SKILLER SGS1.
