During a recent press release Sky Hynix announced the new 8GB GDDR6 DRAMs, which are based on a 2Znm process and are the fastest in the world. Also, the company noted that its new GDDR6 memories have a bandwidth of 16Gbps and the first cards equipped with them will begin to appear on sale in early 2018.

The new 16Gbps GDDR6 RAMs would be a huge increase compared to the 11Gbps GDDR5X units that NVIDIA has in its new GeForce GTX 1080 graphics cards.

16Gbps GDDR6 RAM memories in early 2018

In the press release, SK Hynix said the following:

“SK Hynix today unveiled the world's fastest 8Gb GDDR6 DRAMs. The product operates at an I / O read rate of 16Gbps (Gigabits per second) per pin, which is the fastest in the industry. With the next arrival of 384-bit graphics cards, this DRAM memory processes up to 768GB of graphics data per second. SK Hynix plans to mass-produce this product, and the first high-end graphics cards equipped with the new DRD GDDR6 memory are slated to arrive in early 2018."

The GDDR6 standard will replace the GDDR5 and GDDR5X specifications, and although the company said it will work with multiple customers to mass-produce the new memories, we assume that the most important manufacturer will be NVIDIA, and probably the next cards to feature these new drives. GDDR6 memory will be the GeForce GTX 20 series graphics cards (starting with the GTX 2080).

The GDDR6 will provide greater capacity in industries such as artificial intelligence, virtual reality, autonomous cars, high definition screens with a resolution greater than 4K and much more, but the GDDR6 memories will especially be useful for PC Gamers.
