Sk hynix presents gddr6 memories for gpus nvidia volta

SK Hynix announced just a few weeks ago the availability of GDDR6 technology for high-end graphics cards. Now, at the GTC 2017 event, the company has unveiled complete wafers of future memories designed for the next generation of NVIDIA Volta graphics cards.
The first DRAM chip introduced by SK Hynix at GTC 2017 has the capacity of 8Gb or 1GB. SK Hynix plans to launch superior capabilities later with up to 16Gb or 2GB in the second half of 2018.

Looking at these speeds, without a doubt it is a huge jump from 12 Gbps (GDDR5X) to 16 Gbps (GDDR5X). NVIDIA GeForce GTX Titan Xp graphics cards have the highest bandwidth of any consumer graphics card right now, totaling 547.7 GB / s via their 11.4Gbps GDDR5X chips. The first generation of the GDDR5X chips had 10Gbps in the GTX 1080, although this card was recently updated with 11Gbps DRAM chips.
In comparison, Fiji, the first graphics card with HBM technology, had a bandwidth of 512 GB / s, while the next AMD Vega would have a bandwidth of 512 GB / s and an optimized cache subsystem. On the other hand, a Volta GPU with a 256-bit memory interface and a 16Gbps GDDR6 chip would have a bandwidth of 512 GB / s, while a Volta 384-bit chip and a similar speed would reach a bandwidth of 768 GB / s.
In a nutshell, GDDR technology still has many advantages over HBM, especially when it comes to the costs for its implementation and development.
We hope that both NVIDIA and AMD show their interest in working with memory manufacturers to deliver faster chips in all market segments, especially in the mid-range sector, which is currently cluttered with GDDR5 solutions.
