Qualcomm adds two processors to its line of Windows on ARM compatible laptops. At the Snapdragon Tech Summit in Hawaii today, the company unveiled the new Snapdragon 8c and 7c CPUs, the most common and affordable new Windows laptop CPUs running the company's processors. These will be lower-powered alternatives to the Snapdragon 8cx.
Snapdragon 8c and 7c, New CPUs for 'Windows on ARM'
The 8c is the successor to the Snapdragon 850, which the company used in second-generation Windows on ARM laptops, such as the Samsung Galaxy Book 2. It uses a Qualcomm X24 LTE modem (X55 5G is optional), Kryo 490 CPU and Adreno 675 graphics. The company promises a 30% performance increase over the SP 850. The 7nm chips are designed for fanless devices.
The 7c is the most basic product that is designed for the cheapest Windows 10 laptops. It uses a Kryo 468, Adreno 618 and an X15 LTE modem.
These will not replace the Snapdragon 8cx, the company's high-end processor. The 8cx has yet to be released on any laptop, though we know it's intended for Lenovo's upcoming 5G Project Limitless laptop, as well as the Samsung Galaxy Book S, which has no release date yet.
We have recently seen the Microsoft Surface Pro X and its SQ1 processor, a variant of the 8cx. Currently ARM processors in Windows 10 are facing a lack of compatible applications. Remember that Windows 10 on ARM emulates x86 applications to work in the ARM architecture, although this is not always possible.
