Sony, one of the largest manufacturers of photographic sensors for all types of devices, has announced the availability of the Sony IMX586, a sensor for smartphones and portable devices that will delight even the most photography enthusiasts.

Sony IMX586, new top-of-the-range sensor for smartphones

In Sony's words, the new Sony IMX586 sensor will be very small for its features, making it possible to integrate an effective resolution of 48 MP into a size of 1/2 ″. This Sony IMX586 sensor offers performance that rivals that of high-performance SLR cameras, allowing users to capture high-quality, high-resolution images with a very compact device.

This Sony IMX586 sensor uses a series of Quad Bayer color filters, in which the adjacent 2 x 2 pixels have the same color, allowing for greater sensitivity. During use in low light conditions, the signal from the adjacent four pixels is added, further increasing sensitivity, resulting in bright, low-noise images. Added to this is its ability to record at 90 FPS, making incredible 4K videos possible with great fluidity.

Unfortunately, at this time we do not know of any smartphone model that will make its debut with this Sony IMX586, but it is likely that the new Xperia XZ3 will include it in at least one of the two rear cameras. Photographic sensors for smartphones have evolved a lot in recent years, offering users excellent photographic capabilities in a device that fits in your pocket.

What do you think of this Sony IMX586? Do you think it will be enough to replace your big and heavy camera?
