Apple's popular optimization tool for macOS devices, CleanMyMac X, has recently added a new module called Space Lens . Through an original interface , quickly build a detailed map of your computer's storage, thus helping to explore, clean and optimize the storage space through the multiple folders you have stored.

CleanMyMac X, an essential tool to keep your Mac ready

For those who do not know this application, CleanMyMac X is a powerful tool that optimizes the performance and security of your macOS equipment. Both in the Mac App Store and outside it you can find multiple more or less similar options, some free, others also paid. However, years of use push me to recommend CleanMyMac ahead of other options.

Developed by the MacPaw team, CleanMyMac offers a wide range of optimization modules under a user interface that is really pleasing to the eye and very easy to use:

  • Smart analysis that scans all your equipment and connected external disks so that you can eliminate everything that you don't need but that takes up valuable space on your Mac. Uninstaller of applications and management of extensions such as widgets, dictionaries or bookmarks, among others. Malware removal, which performs a “thorough scan of your Mac to detect any type of vulnerability.” Search for large and old files that you no longer need and that you can safely and completely delete, thus gaining storage space. And now, Lupa, a new module that further improves the optimization of your team.

Space Lens, one more step in optimizing your Mac

Space Lens ("Lupa" in the Spanish version) scans all the folders on the disks (both internal and external) and displays all the elements through an interface based on bubbles of different sizes. In this way, users can access the most hidden files on our Mac. Simply choose the drive you want to explore and click Scan.

Space Lens creates a map of your Mac's storage in just a minute, although this will depend on the volume of folders and files you have stored on the scarce drive. Once the scan has finished, we will see a list of computer files and folders from largest to smallest, from top to bottom. Along with this, the contents that each of them houses in the form of bubbles. The bigger the bubble, the more disk space it takes up.

This "bubble map" shows us the heaviest elements, although we can always access the rest in the list.

Just by placing the cursor on one of the bubbles, the element to which it corresponds will be highlighted in the list, which will speed up its detection even more.

To detect the applications or files in general that take up the most space on your Mac, you can think of the arrow next to each folder, or even better, click on a bubble, and you will see again a bubble map where the largest ones are located. correspond to the largest files.

If you want to go back, just click outside the bubble, or press the arrows (<>) on the list of found items.

To remove items that take up a lot of space and that you no longer use, you can select the corresponding box in the list and click "Delete" at the bottom of the window. And if you want, you can also show those elements in the Finder. To do this, press the Control key on your keyboard, click on the item, and choose "Show in Finder".

And in order not to make mistakes, press Review selection , in the lower right part of the window, before deleting the elements that you have previously selected. Once your selection is reviewed, you can now press Delete without fear.

With Space Lens , CleanMyMac X is confirmed as one of the best optimization tools for Mac. If you want, you can get a free trial and check if it is the tool you really need before buying it.
