The SteelSeries Arctis 7 are the latest wireless model that the Danish brand launches on the market. Their flexible headband, retractable microphone and 12-meter range make them versatile headphones at first glance, so let's see what else they have to offer.
SteelSeries is no stranger to high competition. Some of its most popular mice and keyboards have accompanied many Pro Players in its almost twenty-year history, and its headphones couldn't be less.
Unboxing of SteelSeries Arctis 7
The SteelSeries Arctis 7 comes to us presented in a cardboard box with a matte finish. Already in the upper area of the cover we can see a gold band that highlights the award for wireless headphones of the year awarded by PC Gamer. Immediately below appears the brand logo and a model image. On the left foot, highlights are the 2.4G connectivity, Clearcast microphone and in-game voice chat balance. On the left for its part just under the name of Arctis 7 we find the DTS 2.0 sound technology seal and use mainly oriented to PC.
On the sides we are offered, on the one hand, the technical specifications and all its accessories (left) and awards that the SteelSeries Arctis line has received in its products (right).
It is on the back where the information about the performance of its highlights is expanded more with translation into various languages:
- Lossless Wireless Receiver: Designed for gaming, the 2.4G connection provides a solid, lossless connection in wireless mode, with ultra-low latency and zero interference. Discord Certified - Widely recognized as the best microphone in the game, Discord's certified ClearCast microphone ensures studio-quality, clear, background noise-canceling voice quality. Game Chat: The integrated ChatMix dial allows you to manually adjust the volume between the game and the voice chat directly. DTS Headphone X 2.0: The next generation, Surround Sound X 2.0 provides an optimal spatial image for a 360º dive.
When removing the outer cover, the packaging of the headphones is covered with a partial cover where mention is made of the presence of SteelSeries in the competitive landscape of E-Sports, streaming and users of all kinds throughout the world.
Finally, if we remove it, the plastic formwork mold is visible where we have the SteelSeries Arctis 7 accompanied by their accessories included in a slot inside the central area.
The total content of the box is summarized in:

SteelSeries Arctis 7 Headphone Design
We are in the process of commenting on the general design of the SteelSeries Arctis 7. First you should know that the model that we present to you for this analysis is white, although you can also acquire its completely black variant if you are in favor of more discreet designs.
The supraural band
The supraural band consists of two different sections. On the one hand we have the band itself, a piece of aluminum with a matte finish and grainy shine. Covering it in the upper area and adjustable to our liking with velcro we have the plush. In it, a discreet polygonal pattern drawn with dark gray lines is observable on the black color of the fabric.
The lower area of the supraural aluminum band is covered in its central area with a non - slip rubber about two millimeters thick. This section is not intended to be in direct contact with our head (that's what the plush is for) but the detail is appreciated.
The plush fabric is similar to nylon and has that slight roughness that allows the velcro to be attached to the desired size. The fixing mechanism is flat. By tightening the plush we adjust the height of the closure according to the desired measurement and it is visible on the outside of the supraural band. On the velcro fastening we can see a rubber piece where the Steelseries logo is engraved, the only identification of the brand in this section of the Arctis 7.
If we continue lowering we see that the band changes design and is assembled in a second piece that allows mobility to the headphones. In it we find both lateral rotation and vertical rotation.
The headphones
The SteelSeries Arctis 7 headphones are made of two pieces of plastic of the same material and finish. The first would be the hinges, which allow a perfect 90º horizontal rotation and in turn a vertical rotation of about 20º. The exterior design highlights the serigraphy of the logo on both headphones as well as the presence of numerous integrated controls.
The interior is made of a fabric lining on memory foam. The space available for our ears is quite generous and the internal drivers are covered by a fine fabric to protect them against sweat and direct contact with the skin.
As it could not be less, the pads are easily removable for washing or replacement. SteelSeries itself offers in its accessories catalog on the official website models of leatherette pads, so that those who are not very in favor of fiber can always change them later.Returning to the outside, in the left earphone is where we find a greater number of connections. Firstly, we observed the presence of the external microphone, micro USB port, 3.5 jack, nano USB, volume dial and button for manual mute of the microphone. On the right hand side, the dial is available to manually control the sound preference (game or voice chat) as well as the on / off button of the headphones.
As a detail all the icons and symbols are screen printed in a soft gray color tone and around the manual mute button of the microphone there is a red ring to visually indicate your current position.
The microphone
The SteelSeries Arctis 7 microphone is a removable model. Its rod is lined with white rubber and retains the position quite well once handled. Unlike the headphones, the receiver has a slightly shiny finish on its external face, in which a slot for active noise cancellation is observable.
The retraction of the microphone is not total, leaving it partially visible and thus giving us the opportunity to use it without fully deploying it.Wiring
The SteelSeries Arctis 7 comes perfectly equipped and all its wiring has a length of more than one meter with reinforcement at the connection points and rubber lining:
- USB receiver: 120cm Jack 3.5 mixed: 120cm. USB charger: 150cm.
USB sound receiver
On the wireless receiver, the design of the same includes an audio input and output via 3.5 jack, which allows us to connect the headphones to it if we want to use them wired and not drain the battery. On the other hand, from here we can also connect a pair of PC speakers instead of plugging them directly into the PC.
The receiver has a white LED that responds according to the type of activity of our SteelSeries Arctis 7. If they are not connected wirelessly, the light blinks, while when the device is already paired it stays on.
Putting the SteelSeries Arctis 7 headphones to use
We arrived here to the trial by fire, and it is that the world would be all rosy if we do not give a little candle to the matter, right? Let's see how they behave. From the outset we already tell you that downloading the SteelSeries Engine software is not mandatory for its use, although if you want to get into custom profile moves, equalizer or microphone settings, you are going to need it.
Fortunately for all SteelSeries Engine is not a program that consumes a lot of resources and also has the advantage that it is very visual and tries to make each editable element of the device already visible from its main panel.
The Arctis 7 are versatile wireless headphones, which come by default with 2.0 stereo sound but have the 7.1 surround alternative on PC. Not a few users think that this technology in headphones is a waste, but we also tell you that it depends on how successful it is.
Personally, we tend to be more in favor of stereo when it comes to headphones, but 7.1 sound can add more depth and spatial positioning to video game users or movie fans.In the SteelSeries Engine, within our Arctis 7 we have the following options to configure:
- Configurations: we have the possibility of creating specific profiles according to the use or circumstantial activity that we are going to do with our headphones. Listening to music is not the same as playing games or watching a movie. DTS Headphone X V2: in the headphones themselves we have the alternative of stereo 2.0 (without modifications) or surround 7.1. Choosing this second option opens the Pandora's box and gives rise to the selection of surround profiles (studio, game, cinema). With both 2.0 and 7.1 we can do bass enhancement, equalizer and dynamic margin compression. Additionally we have the alternative of selecting a type of pre-existing profile that can serve us (plan, performance, immersion, entertainment, music and voice). Microphone: Microphone options go through a live preview (detection), feedback, volume, and power options for automatic shutdown when not active.
The autonomy of the SteelSeries Arctis 7 is 24 hours of continuous use. This means that they probably require a charge every four or five days, although the advantage is that you can use them while charging with the included cable, although for some users it may be a bit short if you have the PC away. The percentage of available charge is visible in the panel of the SteelSeries Engine 3 software, although the own on / off LEDs of the headphones can tell us their status:
- Green: 100-50%. Yellow: 49-20%. Red: 19-10%. Red flashes: 9-1%.
As users we find that 24h is a fairly long period of activity within wireless range headsets, so that for our part there is no downside in this regard. The range of action of up to 12 meters is also very generous and is maintained even with several walls in between. Obviously it does not cover the whole house but the range can be reached from one room to another without connectivity problems.
Moving on to discuss comfort issues, something that is appreciated on a personal level is that the SteelSeries Arctis 7 do not laterally pinch our head or put pressure on the temples or around the ears. It is true that this comes with the cost of a slight wobble if we move our heads abruptly, although this may vary depending on the user. The insulation is also quite correct, although only passive and dependent on the density of the memory foam of the pads.
The selected materials make the SteelSeries solid headphones, although this clearly translates into a certain weight (286g). If you are prone to overload your neck or cervical problems, this type of headphone would not be ideal for you, since it is probably better for you with lighter models. We have used them at intervals of about two hours in a row (games or movies) and we have not found any problem with weight or perspiration. The fabric pads retain little heat and do not accumulate sweat, so everything is correct in that regard.
Finally speaking of sound quality, both in stereo 2.0 and 7.1 surround the overall result is very good. Higher tones tend to shine quite a bit in stereo, rather than surround, but not by much of a difference either. In general, the predominance of the mids finds a balance between high and low tones, and although the latter are not of extreme depth, they improve a lot in 7.1.
The profile options and bass enhancements attached to the equalizer (for more advanced users) are an alternative that we recommend on PC compared to stereo 2.0 by default. The difference is not abysmal, but the sound space that tends to be created, especially between vocal and instrumental closeness, is worth it.
The latter is especially speaking for music or movies. The Game mode is undoubtedly the one we recommend for your games, although remember that not all games have 7.1 compatibility and sound processing can be somewhat strange in some cases if you do not take it into account.
Final words and conclusions about SteelSeries Arctis 7
We approach the SteelSeries Arctis 7 review with some skepticism, although it has surprised us. Generally the fact of being wireless is the factor that makes the product more expensive, often more than the benefits it includes. In the case of the Arctis 7 we are happy to see that this has not been the case, as they are really headphones with performance according to their price. The alternatives offered by the software include everything necessary for the most enthusiastic users to fully personalize their headphones. The possibility of using the SteelSeries Arctis 7 without software by necessity will also make many happy, but remember that if you want to make use of the 7.1 sound you will need a program yes or yes, so SteelSeries Engine 3 is still recommended to install (even if you don't run it 24/7).
Comfort during use and the performance of the battery (24h) are two of the aspects that we like the most, as well as the range of connectivity (12m). A slight background noise is noticeable when they are active, but is imperceptible when we turn up the volume. Something we would also be grateful for is a bit more distance on the charging cable when we use it while it's connected, and it would have been even better if it were braided. We understand that the wiring is more a necessary complement than something constant, but if we take into account the cost of the headphones, perhaps it would have been desirable for a minimum price difference.
We recommend reading: Best headphones on the market.
Like headsets, the in-game chat microphone and regulator are certainly an aspect to benefit from in the busiest times, including the muffler. That the micro is retractable is another nice detail, nothing to extract it and leave it forgotten on the table or the like. The rod does its job, is flexible, and maintains position acceptably.
The SteelSeries Arctis 7 can be yours from € 179.99. It is a fairly high price and we are aware of it, but if you are looking for a gaming headset with good quality and autonomy, it is what you play. We have been personally convinced, although we recognize that they are somewhat expensive.
