The pin layout of AMD's Ryzen Threadripper sTRX4 and TR4 sockets has been detailed by Hwbattle , who has compiled a complete pin configuration map for the two sockets. It seems that, with the updated pinmap, we shouldn't expect any compatibility with older TR4 socket-based CPUs, even if the sockets are visually identical.

sTRX4 and TR4, the pin configuration of both sockets is detailed

From the beginning rumors about the third generation Ryzen Threadripper indicated that with the new TRX40 platform, the current first and second generation Threadrippers were not going to be compatible. This was confirmed a few days ago with the announcement of the third generation Ryzen Threadripper processors and the respective TRX40 series motherboards. The motherboard manufacturers clearly mentioned that their TRX40 series is only compatible with the third generation and not with previous Threadripper series.

Today, HwBattle has released the first pin design for both the sTRX4 and TR4 socket, where their differences are shown. We cannot help noticing that many pins that were not used in socket TR4 are enabled in sTRX4. The number of pins is still 4094, but sTRX4 / SP3 has more pins enabled than socket TR4 / SP3.

It is mentioned that AMD has implemented id pin recognition to match the compatible CPUs to their sockets and in this case the sTRX4 socket would only support 3rd generation Threadrippers. The socket will prevent the startup of any older processor by recognizing the pin configuration.

This is similar to what Intel did with its LGA 1151 socket, allowing for a different pin configuration on Coffee Lake processors compared to Kaby Lake. And while the socket was visually the same, the electrical changes meant that no seventh-generation LGA 1151 chip could be booted into the new 300-series LGA 1151 motherboards.

AMD is committed that this new socket will have a long longevity, although they have not specified until when approximately. AMD introduced the AM4 socket for Ryzen in 2017 and, at that time, they promised that they would give it support until 2020, something that is being fulfilled at the cutting edge. However, this time they avoided being so detailed. We will keep you informed.
