Toshiba announced the availability of its XD5 series NVMe SSD platform in a low-profile 2.5-inch, 7mm form factor that is optimized for low latency and heavy use.

Toshiba XD5 is ready for intensive reading and writing tasks

Developed for data center or cloud environments, the new 2.5-inch XD5 series is ideal for NoSQL databases, mining, large-scale data analysis, and streaming applications. The XD5 series is also suitable for Open Compute Project (OCP) applications and systems.

Built on a 64-layer BiCS FLASH TLC (3-bit per cell) 3D flash memory, and with a PCIe Gen 3 x4 interface, the new 2.5-inch XD5 SSD option offers sequential read performance of up to 2, 700 MB / s up to 895 MB / s sequential write performance with low power consumption of just 7 W. The XD5 series can write nearly 4 terabytes (TB) of random data per day for five years at a constant throughput rate.

The random read / write performance is specified at 250, 000 / 21, 000 input / output operations per second (IOPS) respectively, making the XD5 series a reliable choice for heavy loads.

The company will present its new 2.5-inch XD5 SSDs, as well as its full range of data center SSDs, at the upcoming OCP Global Summit on March 14-15. The 2.5-inch XD5 units are a sample to select customers and are scheduled to be available in the second quarter of this year.
