A rumor posted by ReHWolution's Twitter account suggests that AMD's upcoming TRX40 motherboards that will host the Threadripper 3000 platform may not be compatible with older Threadripper Gen 1 and Gen 2 processors.

AMD TRX40 motherboards would only support 'Threadripper 3000'

AMD has been praised for giving extended support to its sockets for a long time, but it seems that a quick change in the number of cores and a change to 7nm could force it to get rid of the existing TR4 socket and move to a new design for its motherboards. TRX40. There may be multiple reasons for AMD to do this, but the most likely change to 7nm process technology requires a design change.

The motherboard manufacturing partners have to be in favor of this decision, since it will force users to update their motherboards to use Threadripper 3000.

Another possible reason for AMD's decision is that they could be working on a 64-core Threadripper and the 'old' TR4 socket might not have been fully compatible with such a high number of cores. It's also possible that this rumor turns out to be completely wrong and AMD surprises us once again.

This is the second rumor regarding this topic, the first was at the end of last month.

We expect significant performance gains from the third-generation Threadripper and it might be a good idea to think of it as a whole new platform (which may be why AMD opted for TRX instead of TR). Another possibility (this is purely speculative) is that AMD could divide its CPUs into TRX and WRX, where the latter would be reserved for very high core CPUs and therefore requires a new socket. We will keep you informed.
