Tsmc announces 5nm transistors for hvm q2 / 2020
Table of contents:
Regarding the manufacture of transistors for electronic components, TSMC is one of the most important companies in the industry. Therefore, his latest announcement seems quite interesting to us. According to what they say, for the second half of 2020 they plan to start manufacturing 5nm transistors.
TSMC
The vice president and CEO of the company CC Wei has announced that plans for 5nm transistors are back.
This news is really very interesting, since it shows us how the industry evolves. The change from 7nm to 5nm seems to be much faster than from 14nm or 10nm to 7nm, although there is still almost nothing confirmed.
Large Volume Manufacturing (HVM) is planned for the second quarter of 2020 . The issue is that no company (AMD, Nvidia or Intel) has yet published its roadmap beyond 7nm . The only one that has hinted at this has been the red team, which has only given rise to the idea that we will have smaller transistors for Zen 4 and beyond.
This has been possible due to the great investment that TSMC has made in the development process. Initially, it was planned to use around $ 10 billion USD , but with the great benefits they have obtained, they increased the investment to 14-15 billion.
This new system will use Ultraviolet Extreme Lithography (EUVL) in many more layers than the previous process. This new system will take time to mature, as TSMC is getting new machines for this complex process.
Not surprisingly, when the machinery is fully prepared, the brand expects to have a growth of between 5 - 10%.
And you, what would you expect from the next components with 5nm transistors? Do you think companies will have problems developing new micro-architectures? Share your ideas in the comment box.
