The world's largest chipmaker is ready to begin mass-producing the first 7nm chips with EUV technology.

TSMC to start mass production of the 7nm EUV node next month

Development with the 7nm node (CLN7FF +) is expected to catch up with mass production starting next month. Sources in the Taiwanese tech industry have reported that production volume of the 7nm EUV node, which the company calls CLN7FF +, begins later that month.

It is the first generation of chips for which TSMC will use EUV machines. According to the source, this year TSMC will use eighteen of the thirty available EUV machines supplied by ASML.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) is expected to start serial production of chips manufactured with an improved 7nm node in late March. ASML, which provides 'extreme ultraviolet lithography' equipment, plans to ship a total of 30 EUV systems in 2019. Of the units to be shipped, 18 have already been reserved by TSMC, sources said. TSMC is also planning to start manufacturing 5nm nodes to risk production in the second quarter of 2019, the same sources said.

In this way, TSMC hopes that it will increase its total chip sales by 7nm to represent 25% of this year's total wafer sales, compared to 9% in 2018.

TSMC currently already makes 7nm chips for AMD and Apple, but incorporating EUV technology would improve this process substantially.
