TSMC has just confirmed that mass production of its 7nm process node has just started right now, marking a new milestone in the semiconductor sector. The 7nm process would be used in new products that also include AMD chips, either CPUs or GPUs, hence the importance of this leap in the manufacturing process.

TSMC already manufactures nodes at 7nm

In a report released by Chinatimes , TSMC has officially started mass production of its 7nm node on Fab 15. TSMC is reported to have already confirmed the production of AMD 7nm GPUs that are part of the Radeon Instinct and Radeon Pro product line, which are expected to be available on the market in this second half of 2018.

The most interesting revelations from this report are that TSMC also hopes to win orders for AMD CPUs. The only CPU that AMD has in the pipeline and that uses the 7nm process is the next Zen 2 architecture that will be a big leap for the company in terms of performance and efficiency. The Zen 2 architecture will roll out first on 7nm EPYC Rome processors, which we've already been talking about for a long time, which will arrive next year and will compete favorably with Intel's 10nm Ice Lake-SP processors.

If the contract for the 7nm CPUs is official, then it will not only be a huge win for TSMC, but it will also be a huge win for AMD as TSMC is currently one of the most advanced semiconductor manufacturing companies.

The 7nm TSMC process is expected to produce a 35% increase in efficiency and performance compared to 16FF +. At this point, wafer production for 2019 is also expected to triple the projected capacity for this year 2018.
