Tutorial: run a gnu / linux distribution from a USB stick

Anonim

Hello dear friends, as I promised you yesterday I have developed a new tutorial to show you how to run a GNU / Linux distribution from a Pendrive.

Unlike Windows, Linux allows to be executed directly from a CD, DVD or Pendrive without the need to install it on the hard disk, this is what is known as Live DVD or Live CD. Although this has its drawbacks, we cannot save the changes made for example and its performance is much lower, it is very interesting since it allows us to run a functional operating system without installing it on any PC where we can connect our Pendrive. I am going to show you how to prepare our Pendrive to run two distributions, Linux Mint and Xubuntu.

What do we need:

  • An ISO image of one or more GNU / Linux distributions (Ubuntu, Xubuntu OpenSuse, Fedora, Linux Mint…) A Pendrive of at least 2 GB of capacity for one distribution or more capacity in case you want to use several.

Process explanation:

First of all we need to download a tool called “YUMI” to prepare our Pendrive, once again it is a free application and downloading it is as easy as going to its website:

www.pendrivelinux.com/yumi-multiboot-usb-creator/

Once inside the website, we must go down until we find the option to download the latest version of YUMI and click.

We download the application and open it, the following window will appear in which we must accept the license agreement.

We accept the license agreement and the following window appears in which we must select our Pendrive, the distribution to install from the drop-down menu and finally we look for our ISO image in our system and click on “Create”. It also offers us the option to check the option to format our Pendrive if we have not previously done so.

A message appears warning us that all the information on our Pendrive will be erased, we check once again that there is nothing valuable in it and we accept.

We wait for the process of copying files to the Pendrive to finish and click on “Next”

It will ask us if we want to add more distributions to our Pendrive, if we are not going to add anything else we say no and the process is finished, in this case we are going to add a second distribution so we say yes.

The same window appears as before and we repeat the process but this time we select the second distribution to install, in this case Linux Mint. We make sure NOT to check the option to format the Pendrive this time and click on “Create”

We wait for the process to finish and this time we say that we do not want to add another distribution.

Finally, we only have to restart our PC and make sure that we have configured the BIOS to boot from the Pendrive before the Hard Drive, exactly the same as yesterday with Rufus and Windows. I hope you like this tutorial and if you have any suggestions, say so in the comments?
