What explains AMD's revival as a formidable competitor to Intel?

At a high level, experts from Intel's Performance, Power and Competitiveness Analysis team say that the competitive threats AMD poses to Intel can be summed up as follows:

AMD offers high-performance CPUs, directly competing with Intel in both our core customer and data center CPU businesses. With our ambitions to introduce new discrete graphics to the market, we are introducing new competitors to both the AMD and NVIDIA graphics market. ”

Recently, AMD has been gaining ground by winning public cloud computing offerings. And AMD's competition is shaping up to be especially tough on high-performance computing. Performance in HPC is usually determined by the number of cores and the number of memory channels (or memory bandwidth). Intel faces challenges on both fronts.

AMD's upcoming next-generation Zen products, codenamed Rome for Servers and Matisse for Desktops, will intensify our competition for desktops and especially servers. The latter is probably the most intense in about a decade. At Computex, AMD announced that Matisse, the company's third-generation Ryzen 3000 series processors, will be available starting July 7.

By leveraging TSMC's 7nm manufacturing, AMD is no longer manufacturing its own chips, now it can get more cores and higher performance than ever before with Global Foundries as its in-house manufacturer. These 7nm products will amplify AMD's short-term competitive challenge.

What explains AMD's competitive resurgence? Did TSMC make AMD our biggest competitor, or is AMD's focus on high-end desktop and server parts? Intel's Steve Collins answers this question.

'' From 2006 to 2017, AMD had positive net income for only three of the twelve years. I'm not sure we can point to something that has turned AMD on its head. But I do think it is absolutely rooted in the strategic changes that AMD initiated in 2015/2016 that narrowed and simplified its approach. AMD moved to focus on higher margin or premium segments, specifically high-end customers, data centers, and gaming graphics. And they continued to invest in their semi-console and console business. ''

'' Instead of looking for products with lower margins and lower end, they focused on how to win business with higher margins. AMD added much-needed clarity as they were previously distracted by markets that didn't align with their strengths, '' said Steve Collins.
