Recently, AMD has been gaining ground by winning public cloud computing offerings. And AMD's competition is shaping up to be especially tough on high-performance computing. Performance in HPC is usually determined by the number of cores and the number of memory channels (or memory bandwidth). Intel faces challenges on both fronts.
AMD's upcoming next-generation Zen products, codenamed Rome for Servers and Matisse for Desktops, will intensify our competition for desktops and especially servers. But I do think it is absolutely rooted in the strategic changes that AMD initiated in 2015/2016 that narrowed and simplified its approach. AMD moved to focus on higher margin or premium segments, specifically high-end customers, data centers, and gaming graphics. And they continued to invest in their semi-console and console business. ''
'' Instead of looking for products with lower margins and lower end, they focused on how to win business with higher margins. AMD added much-needed clarity as they were previously distracted by markets that didn't align with their strengths, '' said Steve Collins.
