The arrival of the new USB 3.2 connections has been anticipated for about 2 years and today it has finally been announced. The new standard has been announced by the USB-IF body, revealing that USB 3.2 capable controllers will be available later in 2019.

USB 3.2 will double data transfer speeds compared to USB 3.1 Gen2

USB 3.2 will double the data transfer speeds compared to USB 3.1 Gen2 from 10 to 20Gbps, although it is still well below the 40Gbps that Thunderbolt 3 offers at the moment.

They may not want to get too excited just yet. We probably won't see USB 3.2-compatible motherboards and PCs until mid-year (when manufacturers need to update their products). Also, the peripherals you will need to take advantage of USB 3.2 will probably not be ready until sometime later. This could mean that USB 3.2 does not extend until 2020 within the landscape of desktop, laptop and mobile PCs.

Still, it seems like a big step forward. Although we can already get 40Gbps with Thunderbolt 3 (which shares the same connector as USB-C), it is still an exotic and relatively expensive technology. Rarely do you see more than one Thunderbolt port on a computer outside of Apple's offering. USB-3.2 will be much cheaper to implement and common to increase bandwidth in the transmission of data from one computer to another device and vice versa, such as external graphics cards for laptops.

It is also important to comment that the USB-IF has changed the nomenclatures

We will keep you informed.
