Usb 4, specs announced with thunderbolt 3 speeds
Table of contents:
Earlier this year, the USB developer group announced that Intel had contributed its Thunderbolt 3 technology to create the next USB iteration, USB4. This move brings Thunderbolt 3 speeds to the USB family, creating a standard that offers twice the bandwidth boost than USB 3.2 (Gen2X2), while also offering Thunderbolt's speed perspective to a broader range of devices.
USB-IF Releases USB4 Specs - Thunderbolt for the Masses
USB4 will be compatible with USB 3.1, USB 2.0 and Thunderbolt 3, offering up to 40Gbps of bandwidth to users. USB4 will use the USB type C interface, like Thunderbolt 3. USB4 will not be available through USB Type A connectors, it is what they are warning from the USB-IF.

Now that the USB Implementors Forum (USB IF) has officially released the specifications for USB4, it's only a matter of time before compatible devices hit store shelves. Given the similarities of USB4 to Thunderbolt 3, USB4 is expected to hit the market much sooner than previous USB standards.
Starting with Ice Lake, an upcoming 10nm processor from Intel, the company plans to integrate Thunderbolt 3.0 directly into its processor. This will likely make Intel the first CPU maker to support USB4, a factor that will put AMD at a disadvantage until it can offer support for this connection in its products. We will have to wait to see if, indeed, Ice Lake supports USB4, since this has not been officially announced yet, but it looks good.
