World War Z is known to be an AMD-optimized title that makes use of the Vulkan API, a derivative of what the Mantle API meant a few years ago. That is why we are not surprised by the performance advantage that AMD graphics cards have in World War Z, more specifically the RX Vega 64.

Vega 64 demonstrates its superiority over RTX 2080 with the Vulkan API

The following performance results were released by GameGPU and performed with an Intel Core i9 9900K @ 5.2GHz processor to eliminate any possible bottlenecks.

The first test was carried out in a resolution of 1920 × 1080, with Vulkan enabled and the quality of the game at its maximum. AMD manages to occupy the top 3 positions, with its Radeon VII and two RX Vega 64 models.

1080p results

With this resolution, Vega 64 not only manages to outperform the RTX 2080, but also NVIDIA's gigantic RTX 2080 Ti. To put things in perspective, the Vega 64 costs roughly half the cost of the cheapest RTX 2080 Ti on the market. When the resolution is raised to 4K, we start to see things fall a little in the normal order.

4K results

Even so, at 4K resolution the RX Vega 64 maintains its leadership over the RTX 2080, while the RTX 2080 Ti manages to move up the performance scale. RX 580 is also closer to the GTX 1070 Ti than the RTX 2060.

World War Z is a great demo for the Red Team and demonstrates what a properly implemented low-level API can do, and it's nothing short of amazing. Hopefully we will see more of this in future games.
