Today we bring you the new ViewSonic ELITE XG240R, a 24-inch Gaming monitor and only 1 ms response to make us enjoy our favorite games at Full HD and 144 Hz resolution with AMD FreeSync technology. But not only is this, because ViewSonic has wanted to give it a personal touch with two large customizable RGB LED lighting bands on the back so that our view does not suffer as much in dark rooms, and of course to achieve an impressive finish. In this in-depth review we will see this and much more about this monitor, so let's get to work!
First of all, we must thank ViewSonic for the transfer of this product and their trust in us to carry out this complete analysis.
ViewSonic ELITE XG240R Technical Specifications
Unboxing and design
What do we do when a product arrives? Well obviously open it and see the conditions it is in and this will not be the exception. ViewSonic ELITE XG240R comes in a cardboard box of dimensions 640 x 396 x 207 mm and an overall weight of 8.5 Kg, we will not have too much trouble carrying it, since it has a handle in the upper area. The external aspect consists of a silkscreen that covers the entire box in a gray color with a shy photo of the monitor, thus giving a vinyl appearance to the very striking set.
The package and accessories come very well accommodated inside two expanded polystyrene corks with multiple molds to house all the elements and that do not move. In turn, they all come in plastic bags to avoid scratching or anything like that. The screen comes with the part that gives the image facing the outside of the box and very close to the cardboard, which means that a strong side hit in this area of the box and goodbye to it, so be very careful with this aspect.
In total we will have the following elements inside the box:
- ViewSonic ELITE XG240R LCD screen. Monitor stand. Monitor holding arm. 1.8m DisplayPort cable. USB type-B cable for 1.5m lighting. 1.5m 240V AC power cord. Quick start instructions.
Before seeing the complete assembly, let's take a look at the fasteners of the ViewSonic ELITE XG240R. We have a large rectangular pedestal with a brushed metal-look PVC shell, underneath which is a thick steel chassis. The installation area consists of a metal coupling mold with a single fixing screw, which in turn will allow us to turn the monitor left and right.
The arm that holds the monitor is also rectangular, with a plastic casing and a steel chassis of considerable weight and quality. To hold the monitor we have a 100 × 100 mm VESA coupling, although the monitor itself will only be installed by attaching two tabs in the upper area and pressing a button to fix it below. It is really easy to remove and put, a 10 for ViewSonic in this regard.
After a DIY of no more than 1 minute of assembly, we have the ViewSonic ELITE XG240R in all its glory. The final set looks great and the monitor stand is very stiff and stable, with no wobble or brittle parts.
It is a monitor with a 24-inch screen and dimensions with a foot of 566x434x239 mm, and uploaded it reaches from 343 mm to 530 mm. The entire screen frame is finished in PVC plastic with a frame of about 15 mm around it.
In the right area, we have the instructions to activate the equipment's OSD menu, whose buttons are in the lower area and are manually operated.
We see that it comes with its corresponding energy information label. For power we are going to use a traditional three-pin cable at 240 V AC. The consumption of this ViewSonic ELITE XG240R is around 50 W maximum, 36 W in optimization mode and 32 W in conservation mode, with minimum brightness and refresh rate at 25 Hz.
As we said before, the monitor will be able to reach a maximum height of 530 mm from a minimum of 323 mm, with a height adjustment range of no less than 120 mm. This movement will be really easy to do, since the clamping arm is hydraulic, and only with a little effort we can move it up and down without any problem.
And this is not all, since we can also rotate the screen 90 degrees on the X axis clockwise to place it fully vertical and in reading mode. Something very interesting for those people who, for their work or hobby, need this position.
We show again the excellent support of this ViewSonic ELITE XG240R, it shows with great rigidity and security, both on the foot and on the arm. In addition, its ergonomics is sensational, since we can tilt the monitor between 5 and 20 degrees on the Y axis (front tilt of the screen), or make a 45-degree turn on the Z axis to the left and another 45 to the right (screen orientation). The possibilities are great and it is a very manageable monitor.
We go to see its back because it hides the odd surprise this ViewSonic ELITE XG240R gaming monitor. In addition to the typical ventilation grills, we have two white “V” shaped elements on both sides that will house an RGB lighting system that we will now see in operation.
And although it may not be seen a priori, we also have two 2 W stereo speakers installed on this back. They do not have a too high volume, but they are heard well and to help us out of a hurry they will be very useful.
There we get a closer look at the monitor mounting system through a tilting steel chassis and the VESA 100 × 100 mm adapter, although with a quick installation system. In the upper area we also have a small plastic detail that serves to hang the headphones behind the monitor.
We go to see in more detail the connectivity of this ViewSonic ELITE XG240R, since it is quite interesting. We start from the right side looking from the front, with a three-pin power connector identical to that of our PC's power supplies. We also have a gap for universal padlocks.
Next to it we have two USB 3.0 Type-A ports that give us extra connectivity for our portable storage units, and a USB 3.0 Type-B port that we will use to activate the rear RGB lighting of the monitor.
If we look to the other side, we have the necessary connectivity for the video signal, which in this case consists of two HDMI ports in version 1.4, a DisplayPort in version 1.2 and a 3.5 mm jack type headphone output. They are not the latest versions of these video connectors, but they would not be necessary either, since we are dealing with a 144 Hz Full HD monitor and both support this type of performance, as well as AMD FreeSync technology.
Display and features
Let's now see the important section of the screen benefits of this ViewSonic ELITE XG240R. It is a 24-inch monitor with native Full HD resolution (1920 × 1080 pixels) with an aspect ratio, as usual, of 16: 9.
The technology of its panel is type TN TFT LCD 8 bit RGB (16.7 million colors), with a brightness of 350 nits (or cd / m 2) and a pixel size of 0.277 × 0.277 mm. The backlight panel is LED technology with a minimum lifespan of 30, 000 hours.
The technical characteristics are completed with a response time of 1 ms, a contrast ratio of 1, 000: 1 and a vertical refresh rate of no less than 144 Hz, which we will have to activate from the configuration panel of the graphics card. Without a doubt, we are facing very high performance and typical of a quality gaming monitor, such as this TN panel, this refresh rate and this very fast response.
This monitor also has AMD FreeSync dynamic refresh technology, although of course if we have an Nvidia card, we can also activate the compatible G-Sync mode manually from the Nvidia controller. Starting with the driver version 417.71, we can manually activate this compatibility from the Nvidia menu for the entire range of Nvidia GTX 1000 and RTX 2000 graphics cards. Of course, on this monitor we do not have HDR mode.
The viewing angles of this ViewSonic ELITE XG240R are 170 degrees in the horizontal field and 160 degrees in the vertical field. As in other monitors of these characteristics and panel, after that angle, we will notice some variation of the colors towards a sepia-brown tone. At the top angle, we won't notice that variation and the colors will remain stable.
Speaking of bleeding, you know, the effect of light leaks from the sides of the screen, we have not noticed absolutely anything. The lighting is completely uniform on the four edges of the frame and the blacks have the depth that we expect from such a monitor.
Rear RGB lighting
It is now time to see the operation of the lighting of the rear area of ViewSonic ELITE XG240R, which will provide us with a very gaming finish and will be useful to illuminate the wall behind us, thus providing greater comfort of sight in very dark rooms and at night.
This system is perfectly customizable through different programs, such as Cooler Master's MasterPlus +, Thermaltake's TT RGB Plus, and as of February 2019, Razer's Synapse 3 software. Of course we can synchronize this lighting with what we already have in our team and that belong to any of these three technologies or that are compatible with them.
Well, we must say that the visual aspect is magnificent, but the LEDs that the system has installed, provide little light to the wall behind us. Maybe not the final purpose of it, but a little more lumens would have been interesting to make it more noticeable.
Yes, we must emphasize that if we configure the entire lighting system in white, the lumens will increase, and we will have a somewhat more powerful aura around our monitor.
We have used the Cooler Master software to carry out the configuration, since it is the least heavy and the easiest to use from the point of view of the monitor. We can configure enough lighting effects and RGB animations, as well as put a color to each of the LEDs that make up the system, leaving it completely to our liking.
In this regard, we must congratulate ViewSonic and Cooler Master for providing so many customization options for the ViewSonic ELITE XG240R monitor.
OSD panel and user experience
We now turn to talk about the monitor's OSD panel, with which we can modify the parameters to our liking to leave the image in the best possible way. The control system consists of five buttons plus another on and off button. The buttons have different shapes so that our fingers identify by touch which one we are touching.
Starting from the left we will have a direct access button to a menu to quickly select the predefined scenes of this monitor. We have enough preconfigured and it will be very easy to access them.
Through the other buttons, we can activate and navigate through all the OSD menu options, a menu with a very intuitive and really complete appearance. For something like this it would have been very nice to have a navigation joystick to facilitate interaction.
We have a total of six sections, which we can put in our native language, including Spanish. In the upper area we will see the most relevant options such as the refresh rate, in input mode, FreeSync on / off and the status of the RGB LED lighting.
Let's now tell, from our perspective, what we have found this ViewSonic ELITE XG240R and its image quality for different jobs. In general, we must say that the image quality is excellent, with very vivid colors and a sensational brightness.
Games
Since it is a gaming monitor, we must start by seeing what it offers us in this regard. And we must say that the experience has been the best for a Full HD monitor. With a game like Far Cry 5 and without having touched practically any configuration parameter, the result is very good. FreeSync works correctly and its 144 Hz give a fluid image, without shaking in scenes full of particles like explosions and exploration through the jungle. If we place the scene optimized for games, we will get an extra brightness and high color saturation, but without becoming unreal. We must bear in mind that it does not have HDR function.
Films
As in games, the reproduction of multimedia content at this resolution is very good, with a good level of blacks and whites and measured and realistic colors, ideal for Blu-Ray movies. We also have a "realistic" image mode that is, in our opinion, the one that best suits this monitor.
Graphic and office design
Lowering the brightness or enough, the office work will be correct, and without tiring the eyes excessively. We already know that a TN panel is not the most optimal for graphic design, due to the issue of color saturation and realism. For more demanding users in this regard, we always recommend an IPS panel, but for color taste, and this will also be perfectly valid for occasional touch-ups. Always keeping in mind that we must be face to face with the screen and at a good angle, so that there is no variation in colors.
Final words and conclusion about ViewSonic ELITE XG240R
ViewSonic ELITE XG240R has left us very good feelings in general, we have a very sober a priori design in the front area, where plastics abound and a large 24-inch panel without glossing or gloss. But if we turn it around, we will find a complete lighting system perfectly customizable and programmable from our system, yes, we must say that we expected it to be a little brighter and reflect more on the wall.
The quality of his arm deserves separate mention. We have a robust hydraulic arm with a steel chassis and very thick, with great ergonomics. We can move it in the three axes of space and with enough ease and angle. The clamping mode is also very robust with little wobble or vibration, and VESA compatibility as well. We must not forget that we also have two USB 3.0 to connect devices.
We also recommend the best monitors on the market
This monitor where it performs best is in games, bright, saturated colors and a very high level brightness are its weapons, along with AMD FreeSync technology and its 144 Hz. In this case, we do not have HDR function compatibility., which will be something to consider by many users, although we think that it is not necessary either.
In summary, this monitor is at a very good level and has enormous versatility, since we can use it in addition to playing, also for movies or for work. The price is currently $ 250 on Amazon, so it is one of the best options for gaming with interesting details such as lighting, the two USB sticks, its good image quality and its robust support. How do you see this monitor? Do you agree with us and do you see it as an excellent option?
