Vulkan has reached macos and ios without apple intervention

Vulkan is a low-level cross-platform API, which means that its development has been thought to be compatible with all or most operating systems. Apple has been one of the companies that have not supported Vulkan in favor of their own solutions such as Metal, this has caused their operating systems to be limited to the old OpenGL.

Vulkan is now compatible with Apple operating systems

This lack of Apple support for Vulkan has caused developers to have had to work extra to launch their developments to macOS and iOS operating systems, since they have to port them to Metal so that users can enjoy the same optimizations as provides Vulkan on the other platforms.

Now Kronos has launched MoltenVK, a subset of its API that is responsible for translating calls to Metal calls, which makes it possible to use the applications and games developed with the API in Apple's operating systems.

MoltenVK was born thanks to Valve, LunarG and Brenwill Workshop, who have created the open source SDK together with Kronos. Valve has already created a Vulkan update for DOTA 2 that offers up to a 50% performance boost on MacOS.

Thanks to MoltenVK, developers are given the opportunity to bring their existing games to MacOS without the need for a completely new version based on the Metal API.
