Thanks to the appearance of the new multiplatform graphics API, Vulkan, computers with the Linux operating system will begin to receive much more support from video game developers and hardware manufacturers. During E3 the Dell company has shown the new Alienware Steam Machines in society that will come with the new Skylake processors, DDR4 memories and Nvidia graphics cards that will take advantage of all the possibilities of Vulkan through Valve's SteamOS system.

New Vulkan API will allow more support for Linux

In some way, the Linux platform is indirectly benefiting from Valve's support for its SteamOS operating system, which we remember is based on the Ubuntu distro and uses the new Vulkan API. This new API, which replaces the old and beloved OpenGL, will speed up the arrival of important video games on the penguin platform, such as the recent DOOM or Dota 2 that can be played and are compatible. The arrival of more important video games would be on the way thanks to Vulkan for its ease of porting games created under Microsoft's DirectX, with OpenGL this process took too long and was much more cumbersome.

Nvidia and AMD with better drivers for Linux and Vulkan

Both Nvidia and AMD are committed to making drivers for Linux systems available as soon as possible and take full advantage of the hardware. Nvidia already owns Linux drivers for its new GTX 1070 / GTX 1080 graphics cards, and AMD will do their thing when their new RX 480 graphics and their younger sisters RX 470 and 460 when they land in stores later this month.

There are currently different graphics engines such as Unity or Unreal Engine that already own or plan to include Vulkan. A promising future is coming for the Linux platform in the near future.
