Wd designs the first enterprise-class hard drives for the growing data center market
WD ®, a Western Digital (NASDAQ: WDC) company and world market leader in data center storage, today announces the availability of its innovative range of WD Se ™ hard drives, the first designed for deployment to data center data. Developed on an enterprise-grade platform for 24x7x365 data center operations, the WD Se line has been designed to deliver the perfect combination of performance, reliability and robustness for mid-scale, medium-sized Network Attached Storage (NAS) environments, and backup / archive applications.
The WD SE is a true enterprise-class hard drive with the right mix of an affordable price and the ability to cope with the massive growth of semi-structured data, which is accelerating the expansion of data centers of all sizes. The new WD SE drives will be marketed in capacities up to 4TB, and will enable customers to balance their data growth challenges in multi-disk enclosures without compromising on enterprise-class performance.
"Right now, cloud data center facilities require a cost-effective way to build large-scale storage systems, as well as maintain 24x7 reliability, necessary to minimize total cost of ownership, " said Richard E Rutledge, Senior VP of the WD Data Center Storage Business Unit. “Using WD of large amounts of manufacturing and engineering data has forced us, like many other companies, to use reduced-mapping methodologies to effectively analyze our data. WD SE hard drives are used in our own large data center, where we have gained a real experience with Apache ™ Hadoop®. ”
WD SE drives also target the growing mid-size NAS and SMB markets. Robust enterprise-grade design and increased workload capacity for 6-bay desktop NAS drives for SMBs and multi-disk rackmount NAS solutions with up to 24 bays provide NAS integrators with a complement to WD Red ™ hard drives, which target smaller NAS systems. WD's other data center hard drives, the WD Xe ™ and WD Re ™, complete the high-end NAS market, offering increased durability and performance for large-scale rack-based NAS systems. Together, the WD Se, WD Xe, WD Re and WD Red ™ drives provide a complete portfolio of robust storage devices to fit NAS deployments of all sizes and scales.
In addition to undergoing at least 5, 000, 000 hours of functional and thermal testing and over 20, 000, 000 additional hours of testing under real workloads on server and storage systems, WD hard drives have the following capabilities:
- A dual processor to double processing power and maximize performance; Enhanced Rotary Acceleration Feed Forward (RAFF ™) technology including sophisticated electronics to monitor the disk and correct linear and rotational vibrations in real time; Dual Actuator technology that improves positioning the spindle on the data track (s), StableTrac ™, the motor shaft is fixed at both ends to reduce vibration caused by the system and stabilize the disks to provide accurate tracking during read operations and write, enabling superior and more consistent performance for applications; Multi-axis impact sensor, which automatically detects subtle shocks and compensates to protect data; RAID-specific time-limited error recovery (TLER), prevents hard drive crashes caused by extensive recovery processes from common errors on the Desktop disks, and; Dynamic Flight Height Technology where the flight height of each read-write head is adjusted in real time for optimum reliability.
Availability and price
WD Se hard drives in capacities from 2TB to 4TB, (models: WD2000F9YZ, WD3000F9YZ, and WD4000F9YZ) are available through select resellers and resellers. The manufacturer's recommended retail prices for WD hard drives range from € 129.00 to € 239.00. WD drives come with a five-year limited warranty.
